Yangcheon-gu's Warm Winter Preparation with '11-Ton' Kimjang Sharing

Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that, in preparation for the peak kimchi-making season, the Saemaeul Women's Association, community centers, religious organizations, and others shared a total of about 11 tons of kimchi?approximately 1,500 boxes?with around 1,200 low-income vulnerable households and welfare centers, contributing warmly to winter preparations.

Yangcheon-gu Facilities Management Corporation held the "Sharing Happiness and Love Kimchi Making" event at the Mokdong Public Parking Lot in collaboration with Rotary International District 3640. About 30 employees of the Facilities Management Corporation and 450 Rotary Club volunteers participated in making kimchi together. Among these, a total of 1 ton of kimchi in 100 boxes was delivered to the Yangcheon-gu Food Bank Market Center and five local welfare centers.

The Yangcheon-gu Saemaeul Women's Association also held a "Kimchi Making Event for the Underprivileged" with multicultural women at the rooftop parking lot of Sinjeong 1-dong Community Center, distributing about 1.2 tons of kimchi in 236 boxes to over 200 households including elderly living alone, grandparent-grandchild families, and multicultural families.

On the 21st, the "Warm Shelter Project" will be launched in cooperation with Mokdong Jeil Church. About 80 church members and volunteers will support 5.3 tons of kimchi they made themselves to around 500 households. Additionally, winter clothing and electric blankets will be provided to 130 households to help them stay warm during the winter.

Throughout the community, local community centers and professional organizations joined forces to continue the delicious kimchi-sharing movement. The Sinwol 5-dong Community Security Council purchased 1.5 tons of kimchi in 366 boxes through its own funds and sponsorship from Emart Sinwol branch, delivering them to about 200 elderly living alone. Some neighborhoods made kimchi using crops they personally grew at the Yangcheon Urban Agriculture Park. On the 16th, the Sinwol 2-dong Community Security Council harvested 200 heads of organically grown napa cabbage and radish, delivering 500kg of homemade kimchi to 100 households, adding a warm touch of sincerity. The Sinwol 1-dong Community Security Council also harvested about 100kg of napa cabbage, radish, green onions, and mustard greens over two days (16th-17th) to make kimchi and distribute it to 20 vulnerable households.

On the 13th, the Sinjeong 1-dong Community Security Council, together with the Volunteer Camp, made 200kg of customized white kimchi for low-income elderly with chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, delivering it to 50 households. From the 14th to the 16th, the Sinjeong 6-dong Community Security Council made about 500kg of kimchi using napa cabbage harvested directly from the community center’s garden, delivering it to three senior centers and 50 elderly living alone.

On the 28th and 29th, at the Mok 2-dong Community Center, about 40 members of the Saemaeul Women's Association and Leaders' Association plan to make 600kg of kimchi themselves and distribute it to 50 vulnerable households, including single-parent families.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, "I sincerely thank the citizen volunteers who contributed their sincerity and effort to help our neighbors in need prepare for a strong winter. We will continue to promote solid and substantial welfare administration, creating a warm city of Yangcheon that walks together with the vulnerable, as much as the 11 tons of kimchi delivered this time."
