"China Must Not Interfere in Taiwan Elections"
U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait during a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Taiwan has expressed its welcome for this stance.
According to Taiwan's United Daily News on the 16th, Lin Yu-chan, spokesperson for the Taiwan Presidential Office, said, "We are pleased and grateful that the United States has reiterated its firm position on peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," adding, "China should refrain from military actions in the Taiwan Strait and must not interfere in Taiwan's elections." He also emphasized that the Biden administration has shown strong support for Taiwan in joint statements at successive international meetings such as the U.S.-Australia summit, the Korea-U.S.-Japan summit, and the G7 summit.
Spokesperson Lin stated, "Taiwan's security is closely linked to the security of the Indo-Pacific region and the world. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan has both the capability and willingness to cooperate with the international community to maintain regional peace and stability," adding, "Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities, deepen the Taiwan-U.S. security partnership, and cooperate with ideologically aligned countries." He also said, "We will ensure freedom and openness in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region to promote global peace and stability."
Earlier, on the 15th (local time), President Biden reiterated during the U.S.-China summit held in San Francisco that the U.S. position on the 'One China' policy remains unchanged, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and opposing any unilateral changes to the status quo.
