Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon is taking a commemorative photo with attendees after signing the 'RE100 Industrial Complex Development Agreement' with Hwaseong City, Hwaseong Urban Corporation, and Hanwha Solutions at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office on the 15th.
An ‘RE100 Industrial Complex’ will be established in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do. The RE100 complex is a site where the installation of renewable energy generation facilities such as solar power on factory roofs and idle land is mandatory, and products are manufactured using the electricity generated there.
On the 15th, Gyeonggi-do announced on the 16th that it signed a ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Industrial Complex (H-Techno Valley) Business Agreement’ with Hwaseong City, Hwaseong Urban Corporation, and Hanwha Solutions at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office.
H-Techno Valley is a semiconductor and automobile specialized industrial complex to be developed over an area of 736,000㎡ in Yanggam-myeon, Hwaseong City. Sales will begin next year, with occupancy scheduled for 2027.
Hanwha Solutions and Hwaseong Urban Corporation have been preparing this complex since 2021. Although it is a newly assigned industrial complex with allocated volume, they voluntarily participate in the Gyeonggi RE100 policy and have decided to significantly increase the installation of renewable energy.
As the first new industrial complex in Korea where a private company invests independently to achieve energy self-sufficiency, it is expected that the expansion of renewable energy within the complex led by the private sector will also be possible in the future.
At this site, 42MW of capacity will be installed, including solar panels (22MW) on facility roofs and idle land, and a hydrogen fuel cell power plant (20MW), securing more than 100% of the industrial complex’s energy demand through energy demand management. The 42MW corresponds to an amount of electricity sufficient for energy self-sufficiency for about 60,000 households based on a family of four.
According to the agreement, Gyeonggi-do and Hwaseong City will support RE100 compliance cooperation and administrative procedures for tenant companies. Hwaseong Urban Corporation and Hanwha Solutions will promote the construction, installation, operation, and leasing of renewable energy infrastructure.
Recently, as trade barriers between countries regarding renewable energy have become a reality, Gyeonggi-do, where global RE100 companies and their partners are concentrated, is focusing its capabilities to resolve the shortage of renewable energy supply. Industrial complexes have very high renewable energy potential and large energy consumption, so the province is paying attention to industrial complexes as optimal sites for expanding renewable energy.
Accordingly, in April, Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi-do declared the ‘Gyeonggi RE100’ vision, aiming to achieve a 30% share of renewable energy generation and a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, pledging to realize RE100 in four sectors: public, corporate, residents, and industry.
Gyeonggi-do will revise the ‘Industrial Site Review Guidelines’ to prioritize allocation of volume to new industrial complexes with renewable energy introduction plans in order to develop all new complexes as RE100 industrial complexes.
For existing complexes, eight private investors have been selected, and a public-private cooperative RE100 industrial complex win-win model is underway to expand renewable energy by more than 2.8GW using 4 trillion KRW of private funds by 2026.
Governor Kim Dong-yeon emphasized, "Short track speed skaters say the opportunity to overtake opponents is when turning a corner. I think the climate change issue is a major turning point in the global trend. If we actively address it, it is a golden opportunity given to Korea, and in that regard, Gyeonggi-do is responding most actively to climate change."
He added, "Currently, the renewable energy-related industry is facing great difficulties. Some say it is almost on the verge of collapse. As the world is turning an important corner, I hope everyone will come together to properly establish a position and solve this problem."
