Yeongdeungpo-gu 'Together Kimjang Day' Sharing Neighborly Love

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that on November 15, ahead of the peak kimchi-making season, it simultaneously held the '2023 Yeongdeungpo-gu Kimchi Making Day Together' event at Yeongdeungpo Park and the public garden in Mullae-dong.

This event was hosted by Yeongdeungpo-gu and organized by five groups: Yeongdeungpo-gu Saemaeul Women's Association, Korean Red Cross Volunteer Society Yeongdeungpo District Council, Barugesalgi Movement Yeongdeungpo District Council, Yeongdeungpo-gu Social Welfare Council, and Yeongdeungpo-gu Volunteer Center. About 280 members and sponsors from these organizations participated in a large-scale kimchi sharing event to help low-income families in the community have a warm winter.

Despite the cold weather, participants gathered early in the morning to carefully prepare and package approximately 18,000 kg of kimchi (10 kg per household, 1,800 boxes). Of these, 1,376 boxes were donated to 18 community service centers and delivered to families in need, while the remaining kimchi was donated to social welfare facilities in the area.

In addition to this event, various kimchi sharing activities for marginalized groups in the community continued in multiple locations. These included the 'Kimchi Sharing for Low-Income Seniors' held from the 13th to the 15th at the Yeongdeungpo Senior Welfare Center, the 'Love Kimchi Fair' on the 14th in collaboration with the financial investment industry, and the 'Kimchi Sharing with North Korean Defectors' organized by the Yeongdeungpo District Council of the National Unification Advisory Council. Each of the 18 neighborhood organizations also plans to deliver kimchi to neighbors in need through their own kimchi sharing events.

Notably, this year, instead of each institution or organization hosting separate kimchi events, they were held together on the same day. This approach helped prevent duplication of beneficiaries and enhanced the sense of community by sharing with neighbors in need. Furthermore, the district shared beneficiary information with private institutions such as welfare centers and standardized the support amount to 10 kg per household, enabling more appropriate distribution of kimchi.

This kimchi-making event was supported by 16 local companies and volunteer groups, including ▲Koscom ▲Shinhan Investment Corp ▲Yeongdeungpo Baseball Softball Association ▲Yeongdeungpo-gu Facilities Management Corporation ▲Hallym University Gangnam Sacred Heart Hospital Sharing Volunteer Group ▲NH Investment & Securities ▲Korea Yokogawa Electric ▲Conrad Seoul ▲Korail Metropolitan Railroad Vehicle Maintenance Team ▲Yeongdeungpo-gu Volunteer Federation ▲Yeongdeungpo Volunteer Entertainment Group ▲Oiji Eum Volunteer Group ▲Samsung Life Service ▲Emart (Yeongdeungpo Branch, Yeouido Branch) ▲Ttosuni-ne ▲Good Neighbors, who collectively donated about 50 million KRW and participated in the sharing with one heart.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “I sincerely thank the companies and volunteers who actively participated in the kimchi sharing event to spread the culture of sharing and practice love for neighbors in the community. We will do our best to create a Yeongdeungpo where no one is left out by delivering warm hands to neighbors in need during the cold winter.”
