Yangcheon-gu, Intensive Bedbug Disinfection in Gosiwon and Other Areas

Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) recently announced that, in response to the appearance of bedbugs mainly in the metropolitan area, it will implement intensive disinfection targeting facilities vulnerable to bedbug infestations such as goshiwons until the end of this month, operate a bedbug occurrence reporting center, and promote special measures to prevent the spread of bedbugs.

Although bedbugs do not transmit infectious diseases, they are pests that cause sleep disturbances, itching, rashes, and secondary skin infections due to their bloodsucking on the human body during early morning hours. As reports of bedbug occurrences have been increasing nationwide, the district has organized a disinfection task force to conduct a proactive "special hygiene inspection" this month focusing on 158 high-risk locations such as goshiwons, homeless shelters, and lodging facilities, and plans to distribute bedbug prevention and management guides, self-inspection checklists, and disinfection supplies.

For facilities where bedbugs are found during on-site inspections, rapid extermination work will be carried out, and follow-up monitoring will be conducted every 10 days after disinfection to track whether bedbugs reappear.

In addition, prevention guides will be distributed to 861 facilities subject to mandatory disinfection to encourage enhanced self-disinfection and other preventive and responsive activities.

Furthermore, by operating a dedicated consultation window called the "Bedbug Occurrence Reporting Center," on-site disinfection support will be provided as needed, and public awareness on bedbug prevention behavior, professional disinfection guidance linked with the Korea Pest Control Association, and other bedbug response methods will be promoted to fully prevent the spread in daily life.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, "In a situation where fear of bedbugs is spreading, we aim to alleviate residents' anxiety and create a clean and pleasant urban environment by implementing proactive special measures against bedbugs," adding, "Since bedbugs are not easily eradicated, prevention is most important, so we ask everyone to familiarize themselves with bedbug prevention methods, and we will do our best to minimize damage."
