Establishing a Cooperative System to Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced on the 14th that it signed a business agreement in the mayor’s office with Korea South-East Power, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and the Green Energy Research Institute for ‘Demonstration Cooperation on Ammonia Co-firing at Yeosu Circulating Fluidized Bed Power Plant.’
This agreement was prepared for the cooperating organizations to mutually collaborate on the government national project titled ‘Optimization and Demonstration of 20% Ammonia Co-firing Technology for Circulating Fluidized Bed Boilers for Power Generation,’ which is being promoted targeting the boilers at Korea South-East Power’s Yeosu Headquarters.
‘Ammonia co-firing power generation’ is a technology that mixes ammonia, which emits no carbon, with other fuels to be used as power generation fuel, drastically reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The government announced the ‘Basic Plan for Hydrogen and Ammonia Power Generation Volume and Share’ in this year’s ‘10th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand,’ establishing institutional policies to actively utilize hydrogen and ammonia as power generation fuels. This ammonia co-firing demonstration project is being promoted targeting Yeosu Units 1 and 2 owned by Korea South-East Power and Samcheok by Korea South Power.
Accordingly, from 2023 to 2027, a total of 19 billion KRW, including 10 billion KRW of national funds, will be invested to promote the demonstration project of 20% ammonia co-firing power generation at coal-fired power plants. Local governments, research institutes, and industries plan to join forces not only in technology development but also in pilot testing, infrastructure construction, and successful project promotion through commercial operation after demonstration.
Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong of Yeosu said, “Yeosu City has a city vision leading sustainable climate change response and is striving to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050,” adding, “We will spare no administrative support to ensure that this project, which will greatly contribute to greenhouse gas reduction through zero-carbon power generation technology development, proceeds without any setbacks.”
