Rediscovering Mokpo, the City of Peace and Art in the Era of Localism (lical)
The Professors and Researchers Association for a Democratic and Equal Society (hereinafter MinGyohyeop) Mokpo National University branch and the Educational and Cultural Community Cooperative Together Peace have been conducting the ‘2023 Mokpo Citizens School’ every Tuesday from 7 PM to 9 PM at the cultural space OZ since the 31st of last month until the 28th of this month.
According to Mokpo National University on the 13th, the ‘Mokpo Citizens School’ is a liberal arts school created by local public institutions such as the National Mokpo University MinGyohyeop, Together Peace, and the Mokpo Women’s Research Institute for citizen education, and has been ongoing for nine years since 2015.

It first opened in 2015 under the theme ‘Beyond a Risk Society’ in the wake of the Sewol ferry disaster, and since then, it has held lectures and discussions on major social issues of the year under themes such as ‘Democracy Again,’ ‘The Path to a New Community,’ ‘The Naked Face of Empire,’ and ‘Human Rights, As Imagined.’
The ‘Mokpo Citizens School,’ a liberal arts course held once a week for a total of five sessions targeting Mokpo citizens and youth, has this year’s main theme as ‘The Era of the Village (local), Rediscovering Peaceful Mokpo.’
Starting with Professor Choi Seonghwan of the Department of History at Mokpo National University’s lecture ‘Seven Keys to Reading Mokpo’s History’ on the 31st of last month, followed by Professor Kang Ilguk of the Department of Education’s ‘Multiculturalism and Education in Mokpo’ on the 7th, Professor Jo Junbeom of the Department of Urban and Regional Development’s ‘Mokpo’s Urban Form and Mokpo-ness’ on the 14th, Professor Lee Dong-eun of the Department of Education’s ‘Mokpo Regional Community and Lifelong Learning’ on the 21st, and finally Professor Kim Youngran of the Department of Social Welfare’s ‘Roots and Stems of Mokpo Community Projects’ on the 28th.
This year’s Mokpo Citizens School is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Jeollanam-do Province, Mokpo City, and the Mokpo Cultural City Center.
