Daedong Hospital Hosts Healthy Meal Exhibition to Commemorate World Diabetes Day

Daedong Hospital held the "2023 World Diabetes Day Commemorative Healthy Diet Exhibition" on the 9th in celebration of World Diabetes Day on the 14th.

Organized by the Endocrinology Department and the Food and Nutrition Team of Daedong Hospital, and sponsored by the Busan Nutritionists Association and Dongnae-gu Children's Food Service Management Support Center, this event was held in the lobby on the 2nd floor of Daedong Hospital for visitors.

Every year on November 14th, World Diabetes Day is observed, established by the World Health Organization, the United Nations, and the International Diabetes Federation. Currently, there are 529 million diabetes patients worldwide, with 6 million diabetes patients and 15 million prediabetes cases in South Korea alone.

Countries around the world, including South Korea, are paying close attention to the rapidly increasing diabetes cases by raising awareness, prevention, management, treatment, and sustainable health care, actively promoting these efforts.

For the second consecutive year following last year, Daedong Hospital held the exhibition featuring ▲Understanding Diabetes Properly ▲Healthy Diet for Diabetes ▲Knowing the Sugar and Salt Content in Food ▲Diabetes Educational Materials.

Dr. Lee Kwang-jae, director of Daedong Hospital, explained, "Diabetes can be caused not only by various genetic factors but also by environmental factors such as acquired poor eating habits, obesity, nutrient imbalance, and stress."

He added, "Since environmental factors can be improved with a little attention and effort, which can help prevent diabetes and control blood sugar, we displayed actual food items so visitors could visually check how much sugar or salt is contained in foods, along with providing various diabetes-related information."

To prevent diabetes, it is important to ▲maintain regular meal times ▲consume appropriate calories ▲be cautious of simple sugars such as honey, sugar, candy, and carbonated drinks ▲consume sufficient dietary fiber ▲be cautious of fat and salt intake ▲and practice moderate drinking.

If you have diabetes, you should follow basic preventive measures and know the glycemic index of foods to eat meals that lower blood sugar levels.

For example, choose multigrain rice over white rice, whole wheat bread over white bread, and when consuming potatoes or sweet potatoes, it is better to boil or steam them rather than bake. Liquid juices raise blood sugar quickly, so it is better to consume fresh fruits or raw vegetables.

Since last year, Daedong Hospital has opened and operated a diabetes education room in the outpatient endocrinology department on the 2nd floor of the main building.

Also, it has been selected as a hospital recognized by the Korean Diabetes Association for diabetes education experience. The diabetes education team, composed of professionals from three or more fields including doctors, nurses, and nutritionists who hold diabetes educator certificates, regularly conducts diabetes education sessions more than twice a month.

To receive diabetes education counseling, patients can visit at the scheduled time after receiving a prescription following an endocrinology consultation. Education and counseling tailored to the patient's condition are provided for about 1 to 1.5 hours.
