Business Agreement for '5G Core System Advancement'
Introducing Dell's New Servers to Reduce Power Consumption
"Creating an Efficient 5G Network through Global Collaboration"
SK Telecom announced on the 9th that it has established a global cooperation system for the 'advancement of 5G core systems' together with Ericsson LG, Dell Technologies, and AMD. The 5G Core refers to the 'switch' among the three main components that make up the network: 'base station,' 'transmission network,' and 'switch.'

The four companies, including SKT, plan to advance the 5G Core network by focusing on the introduction of new servers from Dell Technologies, aiming to ▲reduce the power consumption of the 5G core by up to 30% ▲extend the server supply period for stable network operation ▲and enhance network operation technology based on cloud technology.
First, SKT will introduce the low-power, high-efficiency 'Dell PowerEdge R7615 server.' This server introduction is the first case of applying an AMD 4th generation EPYC processor-based x86 server to a 5G network. Ericsson LG is responsible for verifying the early adoption of 5G core equipment on the Dell PowerEdge server. Lastly, Dell Technologies and AMD will support development compatibility between the Dell PowerEdge server and communication software and will pursue NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) standard certification, which is the suitability standard for communication equipment on servers.
Lee Jong-hoon, Vice President in charge of Infrastructure Engineering at SKT, said, “Through global cooperation among the four companies, we will be able to create a stable and efficient 5G network service,” adding, “We will continue to advance our network system and promote mutual cooperation with various domestic and international players.”
