Dobong-gu Wins Excellence Award for 2023 RCE Project Hosted by UN University

Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) announced that it has won the 'Honourable Mention Flagship Project' award at the 2023 RCE Award.

The RCE awards are given annually by the United Nations University to RCE cities worldwide that have carried out outstanding projects. This year’s ceremony took place at the 13th Global RCE Conference held on November 2 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Dobong-gu received the 'Honourable Mention Flagship Project' award for its 'International ESD Youth Project Neuru Season 3,' earning high praise for the project’s concept, quality of operation, and its potential as a benchmark for other RCE cities.

The United Nations University expressed great admiration for the use of ICT programs that increased accessibility for students from various countries with just one click, as well as the systematic program design and operation based on educational approaches. At the awards ceremony, the project was introduced as an engaging process designed to enable students who find Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) challenging to participate easily.

The 'International ESD Youth Project Neuru' is a specialized overseas-linked project uniquely operated by Dobong-gu among Seoul’s autonomous districts. Conducted online via Zoom, this year’s project involved 145 students from 11 countries, divided into elementary and middle/high/university levels, participating in an ESD collaborative project under the theme 'Homes that Save the Earth.'

Mayor Oh Eon-seok of Dobong-gu stated, “Project Neuru is a specialized overseas collaboration project that only Dobong-gu can offer, allowing students worldwide to practice the Sustainable Development Goals with just one click. Since even students who struggle with speaking English can participate comfortably, we plan to have more students from various countries join in Season 4 in 2024.”

Meanwhile, since being certified as an RCE (Regional Centre of Expertise) city for Education for Sustainable Development by the United Nations University in 2020, Dobong-gu has played a leading role domestically and internationally in the field of sustainable development. It won the RCE Excellent Case City award at the 2021 RCE Awards and received the Excellence Award in the group category at the 25th Sustainable Development Contest in 2023 for outstanding practical cases.
