15,375 Birds Vaccinated at 555 Farms Completed
Jinju City in Gyeongnam announced on the 9th that it has completed vaccination for 16,375 cattle across 555 farms in the area to prevent bovine Lumpy Skin Disease.
The city arranged for public veterinarians to vaccinate small-scale farms with fewer than 50 cattle using vaccines supplied by Gyeongnam Province, while farms with 50 or more cattle were instructed to vaccinate their cattle themselves. For full-time farmers who are elderly, female, or have health issues making self-vaccination difficult, public veterinarians visited the farms to provide vaccination support.
In particular, to ensure smooth vaccine administration, a team of 70 members responsible for Lumpy Skin Disease vaccine supply and vaccination visited farms directly to confirm vaccination status and actively addressed on-site difficulties through proactive field administration.
While implementing serious-level quarantine measures for African Swine Fever (ASF) and special quarantine measures for highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) due to migratory birds, the city made every effort to quickly complete vaccination following the first domestic outbreak of bovine Lumpy Skin Disease.
With vaccination completed, concerns about the spread of bovine Lumpy Skin Disease have eased somewhat; however, since it takes about three weeks for antibodies to form after vaccination, the city plans to strengthen surveillance activities on farms until the end of this month.
A city official stated, “We ask livestock farmers to actively cooperate by thoroughly conducting surveillance and voluntary quarantine to prevent livestock infectious diseases,” and urged, “Please report immediately if any suspected symptoms of livestock diseases appear.”
Meanwhile, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Lumpy Skin Disease is a livestock disease that is not zoonotic and does not transmit to humans. All cattle on farms where Lumpy Skin Disease occurs are culled, so the disease does not enter the food distribution network, and consumers can safely consume Hanwoo beef available in the market.
