Shall We Embark on a ‘Currency Journey’ from Ulsan to the World?
Ulsan City will hold the ‘2023 Ulsan Currency Expo’ for three days from the 10th to the 12th at UECO, with participation from Ulsan’s non-ferrous metal companies and domestic and international currency circulation companies. It is the only expo in Korea themed around currency.
Under the title “Let’s Go on a Currency Journey, to the Fun City Ulsan!”, the Ulsan Currency Expo, now in its second year, has seen an increase in participation from domestic and international currency circulation companies, with 50 companies from 9 countries participating this year. Among them, 11 companies are from overseas.
This event features ‘4 Currency Theme Exhibition Halls,’ ‘Invited Lectures,’ a ‘Special Auction,’ and various other events.
The 4 currency theme exhibition halls are composed of the Olympic Special Hall, Korea Currency Special Hall, Special Gift Hall, and World Banknotes Special Hall.
The ‘Olympic Special Hall’ celebrates the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics by showcasing impressive scenes from various sports and Olympic host cities featured on commemorative coins from past Olympics.
The ‘Korea Currency Special Hall’ exhibits the evolution of currency from the Joseon Dynasty to the present day, allowing visitors to learn about the history and culture embedded in currency through a chronological display.
The ‘Special Gift Hall’ displays commemorative coins and medals themed around special occasions such as weddings and births, offering visitors a unique and enjoyable experience.
The ‘World Banknotes Special Hall’ exhibits circulating currencies from 206 countries (based on IOC member countries), including newly issued currencies this year, organized by continent. Additionally, a special booth will operate where visitors can experience hidden anti-counterfeiting features and national emblems through special UV lighting.
The ‘Ulsan Currency Expo Commemorative Special Auction’ will be held on the 11th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring about 390 items pre-registered for online and offline bidding. There will also be a ‘Lucky 1,000 Won Auction’ for on-site attendees.
Side events include lectures on currency themes such as ‘Secrets of Currency’ by Professor Oh Soon-hwan, ‘World Travel through Currency’ by Director Bae Won-jun, ‘The Evolution and Future of Currency through Gold and Silver’ by Professor Park Jeong-ho, ‘Stories on Counterfeit Currency Detection,’ and ‘Happy Asset Management.’ These lectures provide humanities insights into currency and offer help with asset management.
On-site events for visitors include family-friendly activities such as ‘Find the Golden Ball,’ ‘Currency Bingo,’ and ‘Money Game Heaven.’
‘Find the Golden Ball,’ where a winner of one don of gold is chosen daily, takes place from 3:30 p.m. each day. Two hundred participants will be selected by lottery from the day’s expo visitors.
For visitors using public transportation, shuttle buses will run every 30 minutes from KTX Ulsan Station to the venue.
