Busan City will host the global humanities academic event, the ‘2023 7th World Humanities Forum,’ from the 8th to the 10th at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 2.


The ‘World Humanities Forum (WHF)’ is a global humanities academic event co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and Busan City, organized by the National Research Foundation of Korea, and supported by UNESCO.


Since its launch in 2011, it has continued for over 10 years as a platform where world scholars share humanities achievements and explore solutions to challenges facing humanity.


This event will be attended by more than 230 domestic and international scholars from 13 countries and over 3,000 participants in total, featuring ▲an opening ceremony ▲keynote and mid-topic lectures by world scholars ▲panel sessions ▲cultural performances, among other programs.


In particular, Busan, as the first host city of the ‘World Humanities Forum’ and the first city in the nation to host the event four times, plans to widely promote the charm of Busan as a ‘humanities city’ rich in humanities assets to the world through this event.


Busan, having successfully hosted the 1st, 2nd, and 5th forums, aims to showcase the city’s tangible and intangible humanities values embedded throughout the city to the world through this event.


The opening ceremony will be held on the 8th at 1:30 PM at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 2. About 300 people, including Park Hyung-jun, Mayor of Busan, Lee Kwang-bok, Chairman of the National Research Foundation of Korea, Byun Chang-gu, President of Kyung Hee Cyber University (Chairman of the World Humanities Forum Steering Committee), domestic and international scholars, and citizens, will attend to celebrate the opening.


Following the opening ceremony, a keynote lecture will be delivered by Jacques Aumont, a film scholar and honorary professor of aesthetics at Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle. Under the overall theme ‘The Humanities of Relations: For Communication, Coexistence, and Empathy,’ he will give a one-hour lecture titled ‘The Human Powers of Images.’


From the 8th to the 10th, three mid-topic lectures by world scholars are scheduled. Additionally, various programs such as panel sessions and cultural performances will be available.


The mid-topic lectures include ▲Professor Baek Young-seo of Yonsei University with ‘The Humanities of Symbiosis’ ▲Mike Kim (USA), Head of Google Startup Campus Asia Pacific, with ‘Opportunities and Challenges for AI Startups’ ▲Professor Kirstin Malmkjær of the University of Leicester (UK) with ‘Language, Translation, and Empathy.’


Cultural performances will include ▲31 panel sessions (with 224 participants) ▲works by artist Seok Chang-woo, media art by the Tacit Group, and a musical gala show.


For this event, the Busan Regional Steering Committee for the World Humanities Forum was formed to plan and prepare programs reflecting Busan’s unique characteristics. Busan’s planned events include ▲a Busan regional keynote lecture by Professor Na Geon of Hongik University ▲a humanities road tour exploring humanities assets in Busan’s original downtown ▲a special Busan session themed ‘Mobility and Transition in Busan’ with participation from local scholars.


Especially with about 20 days left before the vote for the 2030 Busan World Expo bid, the humanities road tour will introduce humanities assets in the original downtown and the North Port promotional center, aiming to showcase the excitement for the 2030 Busan World Expo bid and Busan’s past, present, and future.


Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “I am pleased that the ‘World Humanities Forum,’ which promotes the globalization of Korean humanities based on regional humanities assets, can be held in Busan, and I sincerely thank all those involved who helped make this possible.” He added, “Through this event, I hope to widely promote Busan as a ‘humanities city’ to the world. I encourage participants not only to feel the passion for humanities at the forum but also to experience Busan’s rich humanities assets scattered throughout the venue.” He also requested, “Please show great interest and participate in the diverse humanities programs held over the three days.”
