After the Accident, Police Given Younger Sibling's Resident Number
Court: "Forgery of Signature and Private Document Is a Serious Offense"
A woman in her 40s who caused an accident while driving under the influence without a license during her probation period, despite being punished for drunk driving two years ago, tried to evade punishment by using her younger brother's resident registration number but was ultimately sentenced to prison.
On the 5th, Judge Song Jong-seon of the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 1 announced that A (44, female), who was indicted on charges of violating the Traffic Accident Processing Act (injury), violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving and unlicensed driving), and forgery of private documents, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison.
A was prosecuted for hitting a pedestrian B (76, female) at an intersection in Yanggu-gun, Gangwon Province, around 11 a.m. on May 30 while driving a passenger car without a driver's license, causing injuries that required about six weeks of treatment. At that time, A's blood alcohol concentration was 0.081%.
To avoid punishment, she provided the police who arrived at the scene with her younger brother's resident registration number and other personal information and forged her signature under her brother's name to conceal her identity. Despite having received a sentence of 1 year in prison with a 2-year probation for drunk driving just two years ago in 2021, A committed the same crime again.
Judge Song pointed out, "Although she was on probation for drunk driving, she drove a vehicle intoxicated without a driver's license, causing injury to the victim in a traffic accident. Moreover, when the police arrived, she pretended to be her younger brother, forging signatures and private documents, which shows the severity of the crime." He added regarding the sentencing, "Considering the seriousness of the injuries, the lack of settlement, and A's attitude of remorse, the sentence was determined."
