Elon Musk Previews Generative AI Assistant 'Grok'... "Even Sarcastic Sense of Humor"

Official Opening Date Undecided... First Presentation After Establishing Company in March

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has revealed some features of the generative AI that his AI startup xAI will introduce. On the 4th local time, Musk briefly introduced information about xAI's first product, an AI assistant, on his X account.

Unlike existing AIs that provide rigid answers, xAI is characterized by having a subtle sense of humor and other differentiating features.

Musk named xAI's generative AI, similar to ChatGPT, "Grok." The word "grok" means "to understand, to empathize." Musk explained that Grok has a slightly sarcastic sense of humor, unlike other generative AIs. He provided some examples through experiments.

For instance, he asked Grok how to make cocaine. Grok replied, "Wait a moment, I'll bring you a homemade cocaine recipe," and then presented a four-step manufacturing method.

However, it added, "This is just a joke!" and said, "Do not actually try to make cocaine. It is illegal, dangerous, and I do not recommend it."

On the 2nd, regarding the guilty verdict of Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, for financial fraud and other charges, Grok gave a somewhat sarcastic response.

Grok said about the verdict, "Can you believe it? The jury took only 8 hours to find out that he committed various types of fraud, something the world's smartest top venture capitalists couldn't figure out for years."

The official launch date of Grok is undecided. However, Musk said that Grok will first be released as a test version to a selected group and later will be available in real-time only through X accounts. He added that Grok will be offered to X Premium subscribers on the web for $16 per month.

According to the Financial Times (FT) and the UK Guardian, on the 2nd (local time), Musk described AI as "the most destructive force in history" during an AI safety summit where he met Prime Minister Sunak. He said, "Eventually, AI will become smarter than the smartest humans, and there will come a time when no jobs are needed."

He added, "If you want to work, you can have a job, but AI will be able to do everything," and "In the future, it will be more important for people to find the meaning of life."

Musk co-founded OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, in 2015 but left the company due to various conflicts over AI safety. In July, he founded his own AI company, xAI. Under the mission of "understanding the true nature of the universe," the company is focusing on creating AI with human-level intelligence and is recruiting talent.
