Gift Dreams and Hopes to Children, Memories to Adults... Creating a Space to Lie Down and Observe Constellations and Celestial Bodies
For the first time in the southwestern area of Seoul, Gangseo-gu (District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) opened the 'Gangseo Starlight Space Science Center,' where visitors can observe celestial bodies and learn astronomy, on the 3rd.
On the same day at 4 p.m., the district held an opening ceremony for the 'Gangseo Starlight Space Science Center' located in Banghwa Neighborhood Park. About 200 people, including Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon and local residents, attended the ceremony.
The Gangseo Starlight Space Science Center, which opened that day, was initiated in 2019 based on suggestions from local residents.
When creating the Starlight Space Science Center, the district focused most on making it a 'communication space like a sarangbang (traditional Korean guest room).' It was designed as a sarangbang that offers children dreams and hopes and gives adults memories of looking for constellations.
The science center was built with a total floor area of 888.84㎡, consisting of one basement floor and two above-ground floors. The basement floor houses a program room where astronomy lectures can be attended, and the first floor is arranged as a space to understand the principles of telescopes and view the solar system at a glance.
The second floor above ground is a celestial projection room where constellations and astronomy education can be visually experienced. It features a 10-meter-high dome capable of showing three-dimensional images. Equipped with 68 reclining seats, visitors can lie down and observe celestial bodies comfortably.
Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon said, “Seeing children laughing and chatting happily gives me a sense of fulfillment as the district mayor,” and added, “I hope the Gangseo Starlight Space Science Center will establish itself as a space where both children and adults can freely come and go, nurture their dreams, and reminisce about memories.”
