Professor Kwon Young-gul, Distinguished Chair at Dongseo University, Inducted into Designer Hall of Fame

The Korea Institute of Design Promotion under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 2nd that Kwon Young-gul, Chairman of the National Architecture Policy Committee directly under the President, has been inducted into the 9th Designer 'Hall of Fame'.


Chairman Kwon also serves as a distinguished professor at Dongseo University and an advisor to the Asia Future Design Institute.


Distinguished Professor Kwon Young-gul is an urban public design expert with experience in various fields such as spatial design, landscaping, and architecture. He has served as a professor in the Department of Design at Seoul National University, dean of the College of Fine Arts, and director of the art museum. From 2016 to 2019, he was the 8th president of Kaywon University of Art and Design. In March 2019, he was appointed as a distinguished professor at the College of Design at Dongseo University.


Professor Kwon founded the Korean Society of Public Design and managed a design company as president of Hanssem. He actively engaged across government, industry, and academia by serving as the first head of the Design Seoul Headquarters (vice mayor) of Seoul City, chairman of the Seoul Design Foundation, president of the Korean Society of Public Design, and co-representative of the National Assembly Public Design Forum.


Additionally, as a design scholar, columnist, design manager, and urban administrator, he has contributed to the development of urban design through writing and public projects, publishing 42 related books including 'New Civilization Design,' 'The Language of Spatial Design,' 'Public Design Administration Theory,' 'Professor Kwon Young-gul’s Public Design Walk,' and 'Spatial Modeling of Korea, China, and Japan.'

With a passion for education, he has devoted himself to sharing knowledge and communicating with students of the College of Design at Dongseo University in Busan, where he serves as a distinguished professor.


He has provided high-quality education by conducting online and offline courses such as 'Global Design Issues' and 'Color Science' for master's and doctoral students in the Department of Design, and actively participated in various on-campus events including integrated design special lectures, international academic conferences, and academic forums to engage with students.


The Korea Institute of Design Promotion has been operating the Designer Hall of Fame (DK Hall of Fame) since 2012 to honor the achievements of designers who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Korea’s design industry and to record and preserve the accomplishments of Korean design.


The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute of Design Promotion select one representative Korean designer every two years after a six-month review and public opinion gathering process involving design-related associations and organizations.


So far, 16 designers have been inducted over eight terms. Inductees receive honors such as an induction ceremony, commemorative exhibitions, qualification as a member of the next Designer Hall of Fame operating committee, and exhibition of their works in the Designer Hall of Fame gallery inside the Korea Design Center.
