Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) won first place nationwide in the "13th Local Government Productivity Award," receiving the grand prize (Presidential Citation) on the 2nd.
With this award, Jung-gu has proven itself as a capable local government that provides the most competitive public services nationwide, leading to the highest level of resident life satisfaction. Furthermore, the achievements of Jung-gu working hand in hand with residents for regional development have begun to emerge, and it is expected that major projects promoted by Jung-gu will gain momentum.
The Local Government Productivity Award is conducted annually since 2011 by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, evaluating local governments' administrative capabilities from the perspective of productivity. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety assesses local governments based on productivity scores derived by the Korea Productivity Center (KPC) across 17 detailed indicators in six fields including economy, finance, culture, and welfare. This year, 144 local governments applied, and 16 institutions were selected as excellent organizations.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Jung-gu scored 795.73 out of 1000 points, which is 94 points higher than the average score of all local governments that applied this year. It achieved balanced and excellent results across various field indicators, securing the top spot nationwide among city, county, and district comprehensive rankings.
In particular, Jung-gu received outstanding scores in the education and culture sectors. It earned the highest S grade in both the number of cultural infrastructure facilities per 10,000 residents and the number of facility users. It was also recognized for providing excellent educational environments and diverse programs, opening up lifelong learning opportunities for residents.
In the welfare sector, Jung-gu achieved excellent results in indicators evaluating the utilization level of childcare facilities, with the number of daycare centers relative to the infant population exceeding the overall average. The utilization status of childcare facilities relative to the infant population also ranked among the top in autonomous districts.
Jung-gu also received the highest S grade in financial independence and financial autonomy, which are measures of the ability to lead district administration independently, confirming its very high status in local government competitiveness.
Mayor Kim Gil-seong of Jung-gu said, "The Local Government Productivity Award is an important evaluation that recognizes and encourages the efforts of local governments to promote regional growth and improve residents' quality of life," adding, "I am proud of Jung-gu's nationwide first-place achievement, accomplished together with our residents." He also stated, "I will continue to listen closely to the voices of residents and do my best to operate the district administration so that living in Jung-gu, Seoul, becomes a source of 'strength' in residents' lives."
