"8 out of 10 Seongbuk-gu Residents Prefer Apartments"... When Asked Why They Like Them Seongbuk-gu, Seoul has announced the '2023 Seongbuk-gu Social Survey and Social Indicators,' which serves as basic data for understanding residents' thoughts and needs and for creating a better Seongbuk-gu. It was found that 8 out of 10 residents of Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, prefer apartment complexes or other multi-family housing. The most common reason residents preferred multi-family housing was safety (crime prevention).


According to the results of Seongbuk-gu's "2023 Seongbuk-gu Social Survey and Social Indicators" released on the 2nd, 79.6% of Seongbuk-gu residents prefer multi-family housing. The reasons for this preference were cited as "safety (crime prevention)" (31.7%), "convenient building management" (19.4%), "accessibility to convenience facilities" (17.5%), "shared facilities" (such as walking paths, waste disposal) (16.8%), and "parking" (11.3%).


The "Seongbuk-gu Social Survey" is a Statistics Korea-approved official survey that investigates the quality of life, interests, and subjective awareness of Seongbuk-gu residents. It began in May 2011 and is conducted every two years. From July 5 to 31, the district conducted face-to-face interviews with 4,125 individuals aged 15 and older, including household heads and members from 2,000 households residing in Seongbuk-gu.


Regarding overall social safety, residents perceived it as "somewhat safe," and the most requested support measures for urban safety were "expansion of security CCTV" (76.3%) and "installation of security and park lighting" (57.3%).


The satisfaction level with life among Seongbuk-gu residents was 6.9 out of 10, indicating a "somewhat satisfied" level, and overall family relationships were also rated as "somewhat satisfied."


Regarding household size in Seongbuk-gu, "single-person households" accounted for the largest proportion at 36.6%. Among age groups, the single-person household rate was highest in the 20s at 89.7%, and by gender, women had a high single-person household rate of 80.4%. For policies supporting single-person households, "social safety net support" was most frequently cited as a priority.


Looking at survey items reflecting social issues such as aging, there was a strong perception that the appropriate age to be considered elderly is "70-74 years old" (41.8%), and the most common opinion on retirement age was in the 60s (53%). Among Seongbuk-gu residents, 67% were preparing funds for old age, with preferred methods including pensions (81.2%), bank savings (64.4%), and insurance (43.6%).


For improving Seongbuk-gu's transportation environment, residents most frequently cited "lack of parking spaces and facilities" (60.6%), "traffic congestion" (55.3%), and "insufficient public transportation routes and frequency" (36.9%). Satisfaction with cleaning services was generally high, with the highest satisfaction in household waste and food waste disposal.


Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, stated, "The social survey is valuable data that allows us to understand the real needs of residents regarding our district administration through on-site engagement in the residents' living environment," adding, "We will actively reflect the survey results in policy-making to create a better and happier Seongbuk together."


The recently published Seongbuk-gu Social Survey report includes statistical data analyzed based on residents' opinions across a total of 15 areas, including Statistics Korea common indicators and Seongbuk-gu policy indicators: well-being, family and household, social issues, income and consumption, employment, childcare and education, transportation and environment, housing and safety, health and welfare, culture and leisure, social participation, public administration, information utilization, community and values.
