Hourly wage increased by 279 won from this year's 11,157 won... 116% of 2024 minimum wage (9,860 won)... To be applied to temporary workers at district offices and affiliated institutions from January 1, 2024
Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) confirmed the 2024 living wage at an hourly rate of 11,436 KRW through the Living Wage Deliberation Committee meeting held on the 26th of last month.
This amount is 279 KRW (2.5%) higher than this year's living wage of 11,157 KRW per hour.
The living wage is a wage system calculated comprehensively considering housing, education, culture, and medical expenses to supplement the institutional shortcomings of the minimum wage and to enable workers to maintain a minimum decent standard of living. The district established the Dongdaemun-gu Living Wage Ordinance in July 2015 and has confirmed and implemented the living wage annually since 2016.
The living wage decided on this day is 1,576 KRW higher than next year's minimum hourly wage of 9,860 KRW. For workers subject to the living wage, when converted to a monthly salary based on the statutory working hours of 209 hours, they will receive 2,390,124 KRW, which is 329,384 KRW higher than the minimum wage standard of 2,060,740 KRW.
The confirmed living wage will be applied from January 1, 2024, to fixed-term workers affiliated with Dongdaemun-gu and Dongdaemun-gu Facilities Management Corporation and other invested and funded institutions. Temporary workers hired with government ministries' and Seoul city budget support, as well as privately consigned workers, are excluded from the living wage application.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “With recent rapid inflation, we have raised next year's living wage compared to this year to reflect the living costs of low-wage workers. I hope this increase in the living wage will improve workers' living conditions even a little.”
