Yeosu Gukdong Port Passes Preliminary Feasibility Study

141.5 Billion KRW Invested by 2030

Expansion of Fishing Port Facilities Including Small Ship Piers and Breakwaters

The construction project of Gukdong Port, a long-cherished project in Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do, gained momentum as it passed the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Economy and Finance on the 31st of last month.

According to the city on the 1st, Gukdong Port, a national fishing port, holds the largest number of registered fishing vessels among all national fishing ports in the country, making it the largest-scale port domestically. However, due to insufficient port facilities, fishermen's lives and properties have been threatened by various safety accidents.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to invest 141.5 billion KRW of national funds to construct a 780m small vessel pier, 12 floating piers (mooring facilities) totaling 1,209m, a 220m rubble-type pier, a 100m breakwater, and a 470m wave-dissipating structure at Gukdong Port from 2024 to 2030.

Meanwhile, Yeosu City has actively pursued smooth project implementation by having Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong visit the Ministry of Economy and Finance in April to strongly request national funding support, and in June, the responsible department held a meeting with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

A city official stated, “Once the Gukdong Port construction is completed, it will not only enhance the safety of fishermen using the port but also greatly contribute to improving convenience for tourists and strengthening the competitiveness of local seafood through rapid cultivation and freshness maintenance.” He added, “We expect it to be reborn as a port that matches its status as the largest fishing port in the country and a central fisheries hub in the southern sea region.”
