1 PM on the 1st, Theme: 'Future Together, Sustainable Future'
Experts in unification, diplomacy, and culture gather to discuss future cooperation plans
Busan City and the Busan Global City Foundation (CEO Hwang Gi-sik) will hold the ‘2023 World Peace Forum’ at 1:30 PM on the 1st at the Westin Chosun Busan.
The World Peace Forum is one of the representative projects of Busan UN Week, planned to brand Busan as an ‘International Peace Hub City.’ It is an event that shares visions and seeks cooperation measures with experts from various fields on global issues facing humanity. It has been held annually since 2020, marking its 4th year this year.
‘Busan UN Week’ was launched in 2019 as the inaugural year, with Busan, a green smart city that uniquely hosts the UN Memorial Park, holding the event annually to transform into a center for peace on the Korean Peninsula and internationally.
This year’s forum will be held under the theme ‘Future Together, Sustainable Future,’ consisting of four sessions: coexistence, peace, empathy, and future. Experts from various fields such as unification, diplomacy, and culture will gather to discuss the importance of global governance and cooperation measures for a sustainable future.
In particular, the forum will take time to reexamine Busan’s role in presenting a future shared with the world as an agenda setter by hosting the ‘2030 World Expo’ in Busan, a city that rose from the ruins of the Korean War to become the world’s second-largest transshipment port and led the ‘Miracle on the Han River.’
Moreover, this year marks the meaningful 70th anniversaries of the Armistice Agreement (July 27, 1953) and the Korea-US alliance (October 1, 1953). Busan will share its vision for leaping forward as the ‘World Peace Hub City’ through cooperation among domestic peace and unification base institutions and hold the launch and appointment ceremony of the advisory body ‘National Peace and Unification Leading Network,’ which will discuss practical cooperation measures, making the event even more significant.
The forum is free and open to everyone and will be broadcast live on the forum’s official YouTube channel with simultaneous Korean and English interpretation.

Hwang Gi-sik, CEO of the Busan Global City Foundation, said, “Through this forum, we hope to explore practical answers on the importance of global cooperation among various stakeholders for sustainable development and what efforts we must make for such mutual cooperation.” He added, “With the launch of the integrated foundation, we have newly organized the event in the form of a participatory talk show styled as a public radio broadcast, breaking away from the conventional forum format, and we ask for the active interest and participation of citizens.”
The Busan Global City Foundation (BGCF) is a newly established institution as of July 1 this year, formed by the integration of the Busan International Exchange Foundation and the Busan English Broadcasting Foundation to promote efficiency in public institutions of Busan City.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “Seeing the horrific wars happening around the globe, I am reminded anew of the preciousness of peace.” He continued, “South Korea also experienced the pain of the entire country engulfed in war over 70 years ago, and with the support of the United Nations, regained liberal democracy and peace. Therefore, we ourselves must strive to contribute to world peace.” He emphasized, “The 2030 World Expo, which Busan City and the government are making every effort to host, will be a peace expo and a venue that illuminates the universal path of civilization where all humanity can move forward together beyond their differences.”
