‘Myeonmok Alley Shopping District Merchants Association Hosts ‘Have a Drink with Myeongok!’ Festival... Celebrating Gwangjin-gu’s Last Traditional Market Festival with a Joyful Makgeolli Event
On October 26, Makgeolli Day, "Myeongok-i-rang Hanjan-hae!" was held at Myeongok Alley Market in Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho), where visitors enjoyed the flavors of Paldo Makgeolli.
Myeongok Market, established in the 1970s, attracts many customers seeking the simple charm of the old days. In response, the Myeonmok Alley Shopping District Merchants Association (President Lee Beom-rae) prepared an autumn festival centered around Makgeolli, Korea's traditional rice wine.
First, a lighting ceremony was held to illuminate the market's nighttime scenery. LED lights were installed to ensure more residents could safely use the market, and under the applause of the audience, brilliant lights shone brightly.
The festival, enhanced by the charm of the night market, was filled with energy. Unique experiences such as tasting five varieties of Paldo Makgeolli, guessing the name of the Makgeolli you drank, and Makgeolli making attracted attention. In addition, delicious foods were spread out, drawing continuous crowds.
The festival, which lasted until 9 p.m., was a great success with over 700 participants. Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, "I would like to thank the Myeongok Market merchants and many others who worked hard to prepare the festival," adding, "We will strive to maintain the lively and bustling atmosphere of the traditional market."
With the event at Myeongok Alley Market, the traditional market festivals in Gwangjin-gu came to a grand conclusion. Starting from Junggok Jeil Market in September, eight markets held relay festivals and received much love.
Going forward, the district plans to continue implementing various support measures to revitalize traditional markets, which are the heart of the local economy.
