910 Billion Invested in Siheung 'Oido Port Remodeling' to be Completed on the 27th Red Lighthouse Symbol of Oido Port

The Oido Port Fishing Village New Deal project in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, will be completed on the 27th.

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 26th that the Siheung 'Oido Port Fishing Village New Deal project,' the second outcome of the 'Fishing Village New Deal 300' initiative, will hold a completion ceremony on this day.

The Fishing Village New Deal 300 is a Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries public project aimed at modernizing living infrastructure and discovering regional specialized projects in 300 fishing villages and ports nationwide to revitalize local communities.

The Oido Port Fishing Village New Deal project is a plan to remodel or newly construct aging buildings and facilities at Oido Port by investing 9.1 billion KRW in national and local funds from 2020 to 2023, establishing a new tourism foundation.

Oido Port is a city fishing village close to the metropolitan area, attracting about one million visitors annually; however, tourism stagnated due to aging port and auxiliary facilities and a lack of convenience facilities.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province, Siheung City, the fishing community, and nearby merchants jointly applied under the theme 'Oido Urban Fishing Village Preservation Project' and were selected in 2020.

First, as part of the 2020 'Clean Gyeonggi Sea Creation' project, Gyeonggi Province removed 76 illegal containers and illegal business tents used for seafood sales for 20 years at Oido Port and cleaned the area through a 'plaza creation (floor maintenance) project.'

Additionally, 11 changes were made to Oido Port, including the creation of a shared workspace and fishing gear storage to improve fishermen's working conditions, the establishment of a mudflat experience center inside the Oido Museum, and embankment maintenance.

In particular, the auxiliary facilities of the Red Lighthouse, a landmark of Siheung City, were remodeled from a single-story first floor to a rooftop observatory style, providing a special space for tourists visiting Oido to enjoy the sea view.

Although Oido Port was experiencing a decline in fishing activities due to regional aging and a shrinking surrounding commercial district, this Fishing Village New Deal is expected to revitalize the area by attracting more tourists and experience seekers.

Kim Seong-gon, Director of the Marine Fisheries Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We contributed to securing Oido's uniqueness for revitalizing fishing village tourism and enhancing Oido's tourism appeal by utilizing waterfront spaces," adding, "We will continue to make great efforts to establish still insufficient port infrastructure through shared water reclamation, such as the creation of a quay at Oido Port."

Following the completion of the Fishing Village New Deal, Gyeonggi Province will hold a seafood consumption promotion event at the seafood direct sales market in Oido Port from the 27th to the 29th, where customers can receive up to 30% of their same-day purchase amount refunded in Onnuri gift certificates, up to a maximum of 30,000 KRW per person.
