Pukyong National University Hosts 'Maritime Humanities' Session at the 2023 World Ocean Forum

On the 25th at Lotte Hotel Busan, "Gadeok, the Difficult Life: 'Recording and Preservation'" Theme

On the afternoon of the 25th, Pukyong National University held the 2023 17th World Ocean Forum (WOF) Marine Humanities Session at the Crystal Ballroom A on the 3rd floor of Lotte Hotel Busan.

The Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) Project Group at Pukyong National University (Director Kim Chang-kyung) organized this session to coincide with the World Ocean Forum, which discusses and communicates the future and prospects of all marine fields. Through a humanities introduction to the sea and Gadeokdo Island, the session aimed to stimulate citizens' interest in the sea and islands and to inform the public about the construction of the Gadeokdo New Airport in connection with the marine environment.

The session opened with a greeting from Jang Young-su, President of Pukyong National University and co-chair of the World Ocean Forum, followed by the declaration of the opening by Professor Kim Chang-kyung, a planning committee member of the World Ocean Forum and director of the HK+ Project Group.

Presentations were given by Ryu Cheong-ro, Chairman of the Busan Fisheries Policy Forum, on "The Lives of Gadeok Fishermen and the Ecological Airport," Hwang Kyung-sook, Member of the Cultural Heritage Administration's Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee, on "Inheritance and Preservation of Gadeok Fishing Village Traditional Culture," and Kim Ki-su, Professor of Architecture at Dong-A University, on "The History of Gadeok Seen Through Architectural Heritage."

Following these, Professor Lee Ho-sang of Incheon National University's Department of Japanese Language and Literature presented on "Overseas Case Study (Japan Kansai Airport)," and Professor Seo Kwang-duk of Pukyong National University's Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences presented on "Overseas Case Study (Hong Kong Lantau Airport)," followed by a panel discussion.

Kim Chang-kyung, Director of the HK+ Project Group at Pukyong National University, stated, "I hope this event serves as an opportunity to discuss the need for recording and preserving changes in living environments and architecture through the history of residents whose lives have been frequently transformed by large-scale infrastructure projects led by the state, such as the Gadeok New Airport."
