The Bereaved Families Association and Citizens' Countermeasures Meeting for the October 29 Itaewon Disaster announced on the 24th that they will hold the 1st anniversary citizen memorial rally at 5 p.m. on the 29th at Seoul Plaza in Jung-gu, Seoul.
They explained, "We conveyed our hope to hold the 1st anniversary citizen memorial rally at Seoul Plaza to the Seoul Metropolitan Government through various channels, and through consultations with the city, the use of the plaza was approved." They added, "The Citizens' Countermeasures Meeting paid in full the compensation fee, including the 62-day usage fee for the Seoul Plaza memorial altar and the overdue charges imposed and notified by the Seoul Metropolitan Government last May."
Earlier, in February of this year, the Citizens' Countermeasures Meeting installed a memorial altar for the Itaewon disaster at Seoul Plaza and reported the use of Seoul Plaza to the city. The city disapproved through the Open Plaza Operation Citizens Committee, but the Citizens' Countermeasures Meeting proceeded with the installation of the altar. The city imposed a compensation fee of 29 million won on the Citizens' Countermeasures Meeting, holding them responsible for unauthorized occupation.
The Association also conveyed, "The Seoul Metropolitan Government informed us that the 'Reading Seoul Plaza' event, which was scheduled to be held at Seoul Plaza on the 29th, will be relocated and held around Cheonggye Plaza."
