The '2023 K-Battery Research and Development (R&D) Forum,' hosted by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology and the Korea Battery Industry Association, will be held on the 24th and 25th at Maison Glad in Jeju. This forum, organized to explore ways to secure ultra-competitive battery technologies in the era of the circular economy, is held under the theme of ‘K-Battery R&D Strategy for the Circular Economy.’

In his opening remarks, Jeon Yoon-jong, President of the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, stated, "The most important factor for survival in the fierce battery industry competition is ultra-competitive technology," adding, "We will actively support technology development that can compose a diverse portfolio to timely respond to market demands in the future."

Park Tae-sung, Executive Vice President of the Korea Battery Industry Association, said in his welcoming address, "Battery reuse and recycling technologies are elemental technologies reflecting the era’s demand for a battery circular economy," and added, "We hope that this forum will accelerate the establishment of an ecosystem including R&D roadmaps, technology development investment support, and regulatory relaxation to secure ultra-competitive used battery technologies."

On the first day, the 24th, Sehwa ES, KC Chemical, and the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute presented the results of battery R&D projects supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and in the invited lecture, Jwa Seung-kwan, Director at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, gave a presentation on the battery industry patent priority examination system.

Discussions among industry, academia, research institutes, and government officials followed. Various opinions were exchanged on securing competitiveness in the battery circular economy, including the battery reuse and recycling R&D roadmap, current status and direction of technology development, workforce training, and the need for regulatory improvements.

On the second day, the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology will hold a meeting with R&D project leaders to assess the current status, gather opinions on government-supported R&D directions, discuss solutions to research and development difficulties, and deliberate on an efficient project management system.

The Korea Battery Industry Association stated, "Through the forum, it is expected to become a researcher-centered platform for technical exchange that discusses major issues in the battery industry from the perspective of R&D performers and presents directions to secure K-Battery competitiveness."
