Installation of AI-Based Pedestrian Safety Systems at 7 School Routes Near Sindapcho and Cheongnyangcho... Real-Time Warnings via Logoprojectors Based on AI Video and Vehicle Detection Sensors
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Ilhyeong Lee) announced that it has installed ‘Right Turn Alert’ devices at seven major school routes in the district, including Sindap Elementary School, to prevent traffic accidents involving children.
Although the mandatory full stop for right turns has been enforced since this year, tragic traffic accidents involving children continue to occur, such as an elementary school student being fatally struck by a right-turning city bus in a child protection zone in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.
In response, the district selected high-risk traffic blind spots with heavy child pedestrian traffic along school routes and pilot-installed an ‘AI-based Pedestrian Safety System, Right Turn Alert’ to help drivers detect children hidden in blind spots in advance and prevent traffic accidents.
The ‘Right Turn Alert’ system uses installed AI video detection and vehicle sensors to recognize all objects in real time, including vehicles, pedestrians, kickboards, and bicycles. It provides two-way warnings to both pedestrians and drivers through LED electronic displays, logo projectors, and speakers. Additionally, illustrations explaining the system’s functions have been attached at the installation sites to help waiting pedestrians recognize the facilities provided by the system.
The pilot installation sites include four school routes around Sindap Elementary School and three around Cheongnyang Elementary School, totaling seven locations. The system guides vehicle approaches in various ways and has received strong positive feedback from local residents.
Ilhyeong Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We will continuously monitor the installed pedestrian safety system to improve it and plan to expand the installation areas in the future to create a safe walking environment where children and pedestrians can walk with peace of mind.”
