Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, Draws Attention with Luxury Street Policy

Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City held the 'Gwangju Green Transportation Movement 2023 Second Half Policy Seminar' on the 20th at the government office situation room.

At this event, the district introduced the five-year comprehensive plan for creating premium streets, along with promotion strategies and progress status.

Following this, Min Manki, co-representative of the Green Transportation Movement, gave a presentation on the theme ‘Carbon Neutral Era and Creating a Pedestrian-Friendly City,’ and Kim Hyojong, co-representative of the Gwangju Green Transportation Movement, presented on ‘Transportation Planning Measures to Improve Accessibility to Gwangsan-gu Premium Streets.’

Next, designated discussions and Q&A sessions were held with Park Pilsoon, Gwangju City Council member; Lee Junghwan, vice president of the Korea Society of Civil Engineers Gwangju-Jeonnam branch; Oh Seokjin, professor at Honam University; and Lee Changho, director of Gwangju Metropolitan City Transportation Policy Office.

Proposals for successful project implementation were also made.

Kim Hyojong, co-representative of the Gwangju Green Transportation Movement, stated, “For the success of Gwangsan-gu premium streets, both leisure and daily life types must be pursued simultaneously.”

He added, “To establish it as Gwangju’s representative premium street, it is necessary to expand the usage rights citywide,” and emphasized, “Appropriate information provision and various citizen participation plans should be devised to continuously encourage citizens’ interest and visits after use.”

Issues such as securing parking spaces for bicycles and personal mobility devices, and creating an environment accessible and comfortable for the disabled and elderly were also raised.

Park Byungkyu, mayor of Gwangsan-gu, said, “We expect that the diverse opinions and proposals presented at this seminar will become a blueprint for making Gwangsan-gu and Gwangju the best pedestrian-friendly cities.”
