The ‘50th Gochang Moyangseong Festival,’ the representative festival of Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, begins its grand journey from the opening ceremony at 7 p.m. on the 20th at the special stage in Gochang Eupseong and continues until the 23rd.
According to the county on that day, the Gochang Moyangseong Festival commemorates the spirit of the fortress built by the residents of 19 counties in Honam and Jeju Island who united to defend against foreign invasions in the first year of King Danjong’s reign in the Joseon Dynasty (1453). This fortress was constructed as a total defensive wall, and the festival is held to honor this spirit of fortress construction and to preserve and pass down traditional culture, making it Gochang’s representative festival.
Especially this year, marking the 50th anniversary, the festival presents splendid nighttime programs featuring various genres of cultural and artistic programs that transcend the future, present, and tradition.
The festival’s signature programs, Dapseongnori and Ganggangsullae, create a magnificent spectacle as residents and tourists come together in harmony.
In particular, the Nighttime Dapseong Ganggangsullae DalBAM performance promises to be a fantastic time as it blends with the local residents.
Additionally, tourists can enjoy the unique experiential joy of the Moyangseong Festival through a stamp tour at 12 locations within the fortress, where they can rent and wear traditional costumes or props to participate directly.
Various programs within the fortress are prepared, including Moyangseong Historical Figures Exhibition, “I am the Sorikkun,” “Beat the Magistrate,” a game of Yutnori with ghosts, and Moyangseong Treasure Hunt.
As a nighttime program, an advanced CT demonstration linked to the region will be implemented under the theme ‘Moyangseong Blooming with Light.’
Visitors can enjoy a splendid media facade displayed on the walls of Gongbukru Pavilion, a generative art show in the Maengjong Bamboo Grove, and immersive Korean traditional music orchestra content at the government office.
When night falls on the festival, even more splendid stages and various attractions unfold. Especially, connecting Maengjong Bamboo Grove and Namchi, visitors can enjoy autumn night romance along the moonlight water path that encompasses the Natural Yard and Nodong Reservoir.
The festival’s charm would be incomplete without a variety of food. This year’s Moyangseong Festival offers an even wider range of food options, food trucks, and a direct marketplace for agricultural and specialty products.
To ensure the safety of all participants and spectators, safety measures and emergency response facilities are in place throughout the festival period. Additionally, parking and convenience facilities are prepared around the festival site to allow visitors to enjoy the festival comfortably.
County Governor Shim Deok-seop said, “The Gochang Moyangseong Festival, Gochang-gun’s representative festival, is prepared as a meaningful festival that brings residents and tourists together to experience and enjoy the fusion of tradition, modernity, and advanced CT, with vibrant and diverse content that unites the community. I hope everyone creates happy memories at Gochang Moyangseong, which will mark the finale of the 2023 World Heritage City Gochang Visit Year.”
