Overcoming Local Extinction... Sharing Plans for Leading Global Corporate Innovation Park Project

Mayor Lee Kang-deok: "All Regional

Pohang City is taking a strong leap toward becoming a global innovation city by signing a “Business Agreement for the Promotion of the Enterprise Innovation Park Leading Project” with local R&BD (Research and Business Development linked to commercialization) institutions.

Pohang R&BD Institutions Drive 'Pohang' Global Innovation City Leap as One Team! On the 19th, Pohang City held the 'Pohang R&BD Institution Heads Council' at the City Hall's main conference room.

On the 19th, the city held the “Pohang R&BD Institution Heads Council” at the city hall’s main conference room, attended by about 30 people including Mayor Lee Kang-deok, City Council Chairman Baek In-gyu, and heads of over 20 local R&BD institutions.

At the meeting, the city signed a business agreement with the Pohang City Council and R&BD institutions to jointly focus on promoting the Enterprise Innovation Park aimed at building a startup ecosystem and nurturing talent.

To this end, Pohang City and the R&BD institutions plan to concentrate all their capabilities on establishing a close collaborative system through ▲supporting startup commercialization within the Enterprise Innovation Park ▲joint cooperation in technology development ▲mutual support for human exchange and cooperation ▲creating a resident startup ecosystem within the Innovation Park.

The Enterprise Innovation Park is a company-led growth hub development project where companies, the main agents of job creation, develop and invest in ways they desire. It is a key project actively promoted by the government as one of the 120 major national tasks.

The “Enterprise Innovation Park Leading Project,” led by private companies and local governments to create regional hubs, is organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and will enter a nationwide competition in November to select model cities that overcome the crisis of local extinction through balanced regional development.

Pohang City is attracting anchor companies related to new industries such as secondary batteries, hydrogen, bio, and digital sectors in Yeongilman Industrial Complex, Free Economic Zone, and Blue Valley, achieving industrial structure diversification and job creation, leading to the city’s expansion as a new industrial complex.

In line with this major transformation, the city plans to present a leading project model to overcome local extinction by utilizing the region’s innovation growth base to create residential conditions where youth and talent are attracted and companies and workers can settle.

To this end, the city will actively unite efforts to promote the Enterprise Innovation Park competition, a leading project for industry-academia-research cooperation and convergence-type corporate city development led by private companies and local governments based on local universities.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “To overcome the crisis of local extinction, it is necessary to establish a high-quality residential environment by building a region-centered innovation ecosystem where industrial complexes, local universities, companies, startups, and research institutes collaborate with innovative methods distinct from the past. I hope all local capabilities will be focused on successfully attracting the region-led Enterprise Innovation Park leading project to complete the Yeongilman Valley.”

Launched in 2016, the “Pohang R&BD Institution Council” consists of 20 institutions including local universities, research institutes, and support organizations. It plays an important role in closely linking the industry-academia-research-government collaboration system through comprehensive support plans for regional policies and strategic projects, as well as all-round networking for discovering and nurturing new projects.
