Successful Leap Toward Becoming a Cultural Tourism Market
Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) is preparing for the final closing event of the Hwangtogol Saturday Market at Muan Traditional Market, which is holding a hot summer after four years since the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the county on the 19th, the Hwangtogol Saturday Market will draw the final curtain and look forward to next year. The Muan Traditional Market Merchants Association, in cooperation with the Specialized Market First Step Project Group, plans to decorate the final closing event splendidly.

The closing event, held from 4 PM to 9 PM, will feature the main program with invited singer performances including trot singers (Choi Yujin, Nongsuro), popular songs (Sion), popera (Cross Four Men), and rock ballad (Kings Band). Side events will include an air bounce playground for children, an impromptu children's dance contest, tastings of Hwangto Silppang made with local agricultural products, and a sweet potato Makgeolli tasting session.
In particular, the Hwangto Silppang tasting and sweet potato Makgeolli tasting will showcase specialized products made from local agricultural produce.
Hwangto Silppang is an instant bread product uniquely designed with images of onions, freshwater crabs, and sweet potatoes. It is a product developed by the Agricultural Technology Center and will be developed and sold as a specialized product of Muan Traditional Market by the Specialized Market Development Project Group and the Market Merchants Association.
Additionally, the sweet potato raw Makgeolli is brewed with sweet potatoes and domestic rice at Muan Mangun Brewery. This year, Jeollanam-do selected it as the representative traditional liquor of the southern region for October.
During the 20 sessions held until the 14th, the Hwangtogol Saturday Market at Muan Traditional Market attracted about 15,000 local residents and tourists, recording sales of approximately 300 million KRW, establishing itself as a representative nighttime entertainment spot in Muan.
Moon Jeong-su, chairman of the Muan Traditional Market Merchants Association, stated, “Diversifying food options at reasonable prices has been the main reason for the booming popularity,” and added, “As many visitors come to the night market every week, the sales of surrounding stores have also increased.”
He also added, “We hope many people will come to the final closing event on the 21st and have a healing time.”
Governor Kim San said, “Through the Saturday Market, we saw the potential for the traditional market to become a complex cultural space enjoyed by everyone from family visitors to the MZ generation,” and added, “We will actively support the successful completion of this year’s Specialized First Step Foundation Project to designate it as a cultural tourism market.”
