Nowon-gu Mayor Oh Seung-rok Attends 'Island Anjwa-do of Nowon' Proclamation Ceremony and Sculpture Unveiling Ceremony

On the 18th at 2 p.m., Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District, Seoul, attended the proclamation ceremony of the ‘Island of Nowon’ and the unveiling ceremony of the sculpture held in Anjwa-myeon, Sinan-gun.

Anjwa Island was designated as the honorary island of Nowon as Sinan-gun, a sister city of Nowon District, shared the title of ‘Honorary Island.’ Since establishing a sisterhood relationship in May 2011, Nowon District and Sinan-gun have actively exchanged through events such as direct trade markets and signing an MOU on reusable ice packs.

On this day, district officials visited Anjwa Island in person to attend the proclamation ceremony of the ‘Island of Nowon.’ Additionally, to strengthen friendly cooperation between the two cities, a sculpture and a marker stone were installed in Anjwa-myeon, and an unveiling ceremony was held.

The event was attended by Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District; Park Woo-ryang, Governor of Sinan-gun; Kim Joon-sung, Chairman of Nowon District Council; Kim Hyuk-sung, Chairman of Sinan-gun Council; members of the provincial, district, and county councils; and local residents.

The sculpture represents the spatial concept of Nowon District and Sinan-gun as a ‘circle.’ At the bottom, stairs and a wooden deck were installed to allow visitors to use it as a photo zone. A QR code was embedded on the marker stone to provide easy access to the district newsletter ‘Healing Nowon’ and the YouTube channel ‘Nowon District Office Mihongssi.’

Through the proclamation of ‘Anjwa Island, Island of Nowon’ and the installation of the sculpture, the district expects to promote ‘Cultural City Nowon’ to tourists visiting Sinan-gun and to foster joint development with Sinan-gun through multifaceted exchanges and cooperation in culture, tourism, education, and more.

Anjwa Island is home to the birthplace of the world-renowned painter the late Kim Whanki, and the world’s first ‘Floating Museum’ is being established there. It is also famous as the ‘Purple Island,’ an excellent tourist village selected by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
