Violation of the Information and Communications Network Act and Charges of Extortion
The prosecution has arrested and indicted a teenager who hacked into a famous online bookstore and entrance exam academy websites to extort money.
On the 17th, the Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-mi) indicted A (16) on charges of violating the Information and Communications Network Act and extortion.
A is accused of hacking into two online bookstores and two entrance exam academy websites, stealing approximately 1.4 million encrypted e-book decryption keys and 596 video files, and then threatening one online bookstore to release the decrypted e-book passwords, extorting about 80 million won in Bitcoin and cash.
A prosecution official stated, “From the initial stage of the investigation, we cooperated closely with the police to carry out the investigation,” and added, “We will make every effort to maintain the prosecution so that a sentence commensurate with the crime can be imposed.”
