14 Landslide Prevention and Maintenance Projects Completed in Geumcheon-gu... 'Visiting Field Mayor's Day' with Residents on Forest Disaster Prevention
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it has completed disaster prevention construction at 14 forest areas to prevent forest disasters caused by climate change.
Geumcheon-gu has an east-high-west-low terrain, with mountainous areas on the east side featuring steep slopes, and relatively lowlands on the west side, posing potential risks of forest disasters such as soil erosion.
Since March, restoration and extension work on streams has been carried out at six locations, including Hoamsan Forest Trail Park and near the Archery Range. Waterways were expanded and check dams were installed to accommodate water flow during heavy rains and prevent soil erosion.
In August last year, some forest damage occurred due to heavy rainfall near the residential area of Siheung 4-dong. Three "dangerous slopes" adjacent to this area were stabilized using multi-anchor piles and earth retaining methods. Afterwards, vertical gardens were created on the slopes with flowers and trees such as silver grass, suhocho, and chiljahwa to improve the landscape. Additionally, five existing erosion control facilities were fully maintained.
On October 12, Geumcheon-gu held an on-site Mayor's Day event titled "Safe Siheung 4-dong from Forest Disasters" together with residents of Siheung 4-dong. About 30 residents living near the forest areas toured the completed disaster prevention sites while receiving explanations about the projects.
From December last year to June this year, Geumcheon-gu conducted surveys of areas at risk of landslides and established management plans for proactive prevention. The areas identified through the survey are scheduled for maintenance starting in 2024.
Mayor Yu Seong-hoon of Geumcheon-gu stated, "Amid the ongoing climate change crisis, we will secure the safety of residents and prevent property damage through prompt restoration and proactive prevention," adding, "We will also provide safe and pleasant forest environments for all residents."
