Why Was the Naming of Godeok Bridge Hoped for at the Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival?

Operation of 'Somang Irumteo' at Amsa-dong Site from 13th to 15th: Somang Card Writing, Photo Zone... 460,000 Gangdong Residents United to Fully Support the Naming of Godeok Bridge

Why Was the Naming of Godeok Bridge Hoped for at the Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival? Godeok Bridge Naming Wish Lighting Ceremony

Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) operated a Wish Fulfillment Center wishing for the naming of Godeok Bridge at the ‘28th Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival’ held for three days from the 13th to the 15th at the Amsa-dong archaeological site in Seoul.

This event was prepared to inform visitors to the prehistoric culture festival about the justification for the place name Godeok and the naming of Godeok Bridge, and to gather the will of 460,000 residents at the ‘Wish Fulfillment Center’ within the Amsa-dong site to wish for the naming of Godeok Bridge.

On the first day, a wish lighting ceremony was held, and on the second and third days, from the 14th to the 15th, festival visitors wrote wish cards containing hopes for the naming of Godeok Bridge and displayed them on a wish wall. In addition, a Godeok Bridge trick art photo zone was operated, and an event was held where visitors who posted photos taken at the photo zone on their personal SNS with hashtags (#GodeokBridgeWish #GodeokBridgeHope, etc.) received souvenirs.

The establishment of the name Godeok Bridge is essential to prevent safety accidents and confusion among drivers. If named ‘Guri Bridge’ as claimed by Guri City, there is ‘Guri Amsa Bridge’ within a radius of 1.5 km, which would cause confusion for users and could potentially lead to traffic accidents. However, in the case of Godeok Bridge, there are many nearby areas including the place name ‘Godeok’ such as ▲Godeok Biz Valley ▲Godeok Mountain ▲Godeok Stream, allowing users to easily infer the geographical location.

Also, the 53.2 billion KRW metropolitan traffic improvement contribution paid by Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH) to Korea Expressway Corporation for the Seoul-Sejong Expressway construction section reflects part of the contribution paid by Gangdong-gu residents while promoting the ‘Godeok Gangil Public Housing Development Project,’ meaning that some of the city budget was ultimately invested in the highway construction cost.

Furthermore, ▲the use of the single name (tentatively) ‘Godeok Bridge’ from the early stages of construction ▲Godeok-dong being the starting point of the bridge design ▲the construction site passing through a residential urban area, with residents enduring significant inconvenience and actively cooperating throughout the construction period, and ▲the necessity of landscape creation linked with Seoul City as with existing Han River crossing bridges, have all been reasons the district has actively expressed the justification for establishing the name ‘Godeok Bridge.’

In addition, to establish the name Godeok Bridge, the district started a resident signature campaign last year with about 72,000 participants, and in February this year, the Gangdong-gu Apartment Council submitted a petition containing the voices of about 9,700 residents who voluntarily participated to the Seoul Metropolitan Council, which passed a resolution urging the naming of Godeok Bridge.

Especially, in March this year, Mayor Lee Soo-hee of Gangdong-gu personally visited the headquarters of Korea Expressway Corporation located in Gimcheon, Gyeongbuk, to urge President Ham Jin-gyu to establish the name as Godeok Bridge. Subsequently, in May, the Seoul City Naming Committee also unanimously agreed to support the establishment of the name ‘Godeok Bridge.’

Mayor Lee Soo-hee of Gangdong-gu said, “We will do our utmost to ensure that the newly constructed Han River crossing bridge is named Godeok Bridge,” and added, “I sincerely hope that all residents, while enjoying the Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival, unite in wishing for the naming of Godeok Bridge so that the name can be established.”
