Gallup "Yoon's Government Approval Positive 33% vs Negative 58%... Economy and Personnel Issues Hold Back"

President Yoon's Approval Rating Rises 1%p to 33%
People Power Party and Democratic Party Tied at 34%

President Yoon Suk-yeol's approval rating for his performance in office showed a slight increase compared to the previous survey. Party support ratings for both the People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea stood at 34% each.

According to Gallup's regular survey conducted from October 10 to 12, which interviewed 1,002 adults aged 18 and over nationwide via telephone interview, 33% of respondents viewed President Yoon's current job performance positively, while 58% gave a negative evaluation. This marks a 1 percentage point increase in positive ratings and a 1 percentage point decrease in negative ratings compared to the third week of September survey.

The most cited reason for positive evaluations was ‘diplomacy’ at 32%. This was followed by ‘defense/security’ (12%), ‘overall good performance’, and ‘decisiveness/drive/tenacity’ (both 5%), then ‘hardworking/doing his best’, ‘principled/conviction’, and ‘overcoming the previous administration’ (all 3%).

Among those who gave negative evaluations, ‘economy/livelihood/prices’ was the most frequently mentioned reason at 16%. This was followed by ‘diplomacy’ (13%), ‘authoritarian/unilateral’ (9%), ‘personnel appointments’, and ‘lack of communication’ (both 7%), ‘Fukushima contaminated water discharge issue’, ‘lack of unity and cooperation’ (both 5%), ‘overall poor performance’, ‘policies for ordinary people/welfare’ (both 4%), and ‘lack of experience/competence/incompetence’ (3%).

Regarding party support ratings, both the People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea were tied at 34%, the Justice Party at 4%, and 26% of respondents identified as non-partisan. By age group, the People Power Party led among those aged 60 and above, while the Democratic Party was favored by those aged 50 and below. Politically, 69% of conservatives supported the People Power Party, and 62% of progressives supported the Democratic Party. Among moderates, 27% supported the People Power Party, 37% the Democratic Party, and 32% did not support any particular party.

Regarding the 22nd National Assembly election scheduled for April next year, 39% of respondents said that many ruling party candidates should be elected to support the current government. In contrast, 48% said that many opposition party candidates should be elected to check the current government.

By political inclination, 67% of conservatives supported the People Power Party, and 62% of progressives supported the Democratic Party of Korea. Among moderates, 23% supported the People Power Party, 34% the Democratic Party, and 37% did not support any particular party.
