Did Israel and Palestine Agree on a Ceasefire a Few Days Ago? ... AI Chatbot's Bizarre Response

Google Bard and MS Bing Give "Ceasefire" Incorrect Answer
No Wrong Answers from ChatGPT, but No Direct Response Either
Google Says, "Mistake Related to Breaking News... Working to Improve Quality"

As generative artificial intelligence (AI) gains popularity, it responded to the ongoing situation between Israel and Palestine by saying it is "under a ceasefire." This is because it does not properly reflect the latest information.

On the 12th (local time), according to U.S. economic media Business Insider and major foreign news outlets, generative AI chatbots like Google's Bard and Microsoft's (MS) Bing, similar to Chat GPT, answered that the relationship between Israel and Palestine is "under a ceasefire."

Bard responded incorrectly, saying, "Israel is currently under a ceasefire," and added, "An agreement was reached on May 13 between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Jihad after several days of violence that claimed at least 35 lives."

When the same command was entered again, it gave a different answer, stating, "A ceasefire was agreed upon on August 7, 2023." When asked about the "current situation as of October 12," it finally said, "There is no ceasefire in Israel at present."

However, regarding the power outage in the Gaza Strip, it gave an accurate answer, stating, "On October 11, the only power plant in the Gaza Strip stopped operating," and explained, "This was due to the blockade imposed by Israel in retaliation for Hamas's infiltration."

MS's chatbot Bing also gave an incorrect answer to the question about Israel's ceasefire, saying, "There is a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip that took effect on October 10."

The Bing chatbot reiterated the ceasefire and said, "Egypt mediated it."

Only when asked, "Are the people of Israel and Palestine currently fighting?" did it inform the current situation, saying, "Violent clashes occurred on Saturday, October 7."

The premium version of Chat GPT, Chat GPT Plus, did not provide incorrect answers but seemed to avoid giving direct responses.

Chat GPT explained the situation between Israel and Palestine as follows: "There have been ceasefire efforts and demands, but hostilities continue, making the ceasefire fragile and the overall situation precarious," adding, "The heightened tensions in October 2023 may indicate that previous ceasefire agreements have broken down."

Foreign media pointed out, "If such generative AI presents errors about current events, people may face greater difficulties in finding trustworthy news."

In response, a Google spokesperson said in a statement, "All experiences based on large language models (LLM) can make mistakes, especially regarding breaking news," and added, "The company is always striving to improve quality and reliability."

MS and OpenAI, the developer of Chat GPT, did not provide separate responses.
