The finals of the "1st Hanmoe An Ho-sang National Korean Poetry Recitation Contest," held at the Uiryeong County Citizens' Hall in Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam, successfully concluded on the 9th.

The contest honors Namjeo Lee Woo-sik, Go-ru Lee Geuk-ro, and Dr. Hanmoe An Ho-sang, the key figures behind the creation of "Malmoi," the birth of the Joseon language during the hardships of the Joseon language, who compiled the Great Joseon Language Dictionary and were members of the Joseon Language Society. It aims to commemorate their spirit of love for the Korean language and to uphold the noble legacy of these figures from Uiryeong. Additionally, it seeks to expand the base of poetry recitation culture in the Republic of Korea and to nurture capable poetry reciters.


This year's contest was hosted by the National Korean Language Dictionary Museum Construction Promotion Committee and the Uiryeong Cultural Center, and organized by the National Korean Language Dictionary Museum Construction Promotion Committee, Uiryeong Cultural Center, and Uiryeong Poetry Recitation Literature Association. The chairman of the operating committee was Kim Tae-geun, director of the Korea Culture and Arts Education Institute.


Marking the 577th anniversary of Hangeul Day, the "1st Hanmoe An Ho-sang National Korean Poetry Recitation Contest" featured about 30 participants who passed the preliminaries from across the country. They passionately competed by reciting two poems?one assigned and one free choice?in front of four judges.

The grand prize was awarded to △Bae Jeong-sook (Busan), who recited the assigned poem "Hangang Song" by Lee Geuk-ro and the free poem "Funeral House" by poet Yoo Chi-hwan, earning a prize of 2 million KRW, a certificate, and a poetry reciter certification. △Two silver prizes went to Woo Jeong-sook (Sancheong) and Jeon Mi-hwa (Uiryeong), each receiving 1 million KRW, a certificate, and a poetry reciter certification. △Three bronze prizes were awarded to Lee Soon-hee (Hapcheon), Kang Anna (Changwon), and Hwang Hye-kyung (Busan), each receiving 300,000 KRW and a certificate. △Six honorable mentions went to Eo Young-soon (Yangsan), Kwon Ki-beom (Gyeongsan), Oh Kyung-sook (Changwon), Park Bong-sik (Changwon), Kim Jeong-ok (Gwangyang), and Kim Hyun-ja (Seoul), each receiving 100,000 KRW and a certificate.

Oh Tae-wan, the mayor of Uiryeong-gun, said, "As the hometown of the three pioneers who compiled the Great Joseon Language Dictionary and sought to protect our language in the land of loyalty, I hope that the 1st Hanmoe An Ho-sang Korean Poetry Recitation Contest held in Uiryeong-gun will be an opportunity for all participants to recite poetry, enjoy the autumn atmosphere, and find peace of mind."
