Hyundai Glovis is building a global distribution center (GDC) equipped with advanced automation facilities in the Incheon International Airport logistics complex. This move aims to expand its business scope beyond land and sea to the global air logistics market.
On the 12th, Hyundai Glovis announced that it has started construction of the global distribution center within the Free Trade Zone of Incheon International Airport's second airport logistics complex. Last year, Glovis signed an agreement with Incheon International Airport to establish the logistics center.
Hyundai Glovis will build the GDC with five floors above ground and an area of 44,420㎡ (13,437 pyeong). The target completion date is 2025. After commencing operations, it plans to handle an average of 25,000 tons of new air cargo annually for five years.
In particular, Hyundai Glovis envisions the GDC as an advanced logistics center equipped with automation facilities to handle global e-commerce cargo. It plans to introduce logistics robots developed by its affiliate Boston Dynamics and automated sorting systems, and operate express delivery services with its own customs clearance facilities. Additionally, it will establish automated warehouses for storing high-tech items such as precision machinery and medical devices, as well as cold chain (refrigerated and frozen) logistics warehouses for fresh cargo.
Hyundai Glovis has been preparing to expand its logistics business from land and sea to air. Previously, it promoted direct air cargo operations at airports worldwide, including Frankfurt in Germany, Vienna in Austria, Atlanta in the United States, and Chennai in India, and also conducted air forwarding (air cargo transportation brokerage) services. Furthermore, it obtained lithium battery air transport certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to actively respond to the growing air logistics sector related to batteries.
A Hyundai Glovis official said, "We plan to develop the global best logistics center by combining the logistics operation know-how accumulated so far with IT capabilities," adding, "We will continue to provide high-quality services in all logistics areas?land, sea, and air?to enhance customer satisfaction."
