Ulsan City Takes Initiative to Foster 'Semiconductor Talent'

Agreement between UNIST, Ulsan University, and Ulsan Science College

24.3 Billion KRW National Funding to Fully Promote Advanced Industry Development

Ulsan City is set to intensify cooperation with local universities to foster the advanced semiconductor industry. The universities participating in this collaboration are Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), University of Ulsan, and Ulsan College of Science.

On the 11th at 11:40 a.m., Ulsan City announced that it will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with these universities at the main building of the University of Ulsan to cultivate customized talent for the semiconductor advanced industry. Attending the signing ceremony are Kim Doo-gyeom, Mayor of Ulsan; Lee Yong-hoon, President of UNIST; Oh Yeon-cheon, President of the University of Ulsan; and Cho Hong-rae, President of Ulsan College of Science.

Since early this year, Ulsan City has been jointly responding to government public projects for semiconductor research and development and talent cultivation with related educational institutions in the region, including UNIST, in line with the government’s cross-ministerial collaboration policy to promote the semiconductor industry.

As a result, this year, new projects such as △Support Project for Semiconductor Specialized Graduate Schools △Semiconductor Major Track Project △Advanced Industry Talent Cultivation Bootcamp Project have been selected, receiving a total of 24.3 billion KRW in national funding.

With this MOU, Ulsan City plans to link the newly selected semiconductor talent cultivation projects this year to nurture customized talent demanded by the local industry and to foster the semiconductor industry in Ulsan through joint cooperation.

According to the agreement, Ulsan City will provide administrative support to promote semiconductor talent cultivation projects.

Additionally, local universities will collaborate to develop growth pathways for talent cultivation from associate degrees to bachelor’s and master’s/doctoral degrees, discover and implement various employment education programs, and pool each university’s semiconductor infrastructure and outstanding human resources.

Kim Doo-gyeom, Mayor of Ulsan, stated, “This agreement will serve as a turning point to further strengthen competitiveness in the global semiconductor market and accelerate the establishment of a Ulsan-type semiconductor development strategy. I hope Ulsan City and local universities will work together to enhance regional economic development and improve educational opportunities for students.”

In August, UNIST and the University of Ulsan were selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s National Semiconductor Laboratory Support Core Technology Development Project, actively advancing national projects.
