Asian Games fencing heroes are heading to Haenam this time. From the 13th to the 19th, the 104th National Sports Festival will be held across various cities and counties in Jeollanam-do, with fencing and modern pentathlon events taking place in Haenam County.

In particular, many athletes who achieved brilliant results at the Hangzhou Asian Games will participate in this competition.

In the fencing category, athletes from the national fencing team, which has won the overall championship at the Asian Games four times in a row, will compete at the Haenam Useul Gymnasium. Among them are Oh Sang-wook (Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall), who won two gold medals in men's sabre at Hangzhou, as well as Gu Bon-gil, Kim Jeong-hwan (both from the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation), and Kim Jun-ho (Hwaseong City Hall), who secured the team gold medal.

Additionally, along with Lee Ji-hoon and Jung Jin-hwa (both from LH), he also secured first place in the team event, becoming the first Korean athlete to win two gold medals at this competition. Jeon Woong-tae is the first athlete in Asian Games modern pentathlon history to win back-to-back individual titles and two championships.

Korea has achieved the best results among participating countries in modern pentathlon at this competition, with two gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal, including silver in the women's individual event by Kim Sun-woo (Gyeonggi Province Office) and bronze in the team event.

The fencing events of the National Sports Festival will be held for seven days from the 13th to the 19th at Haenam Useul Gymnasium. The modern pentathlon events, excluding equestrian, will take place over four days from the 14th to the 17th, with athletics and shooting at Useul Stadium, fencing at Useul Dongbaek Gymnasium, and swimming at Jo Oh-ryun Swimming Pool.

With many Asian Games heroes participating, the local enthusiasm for the National Sports Festival is rising.

On the 13th, the torch that will light up the main stadium will pass through Haenam from 1:00 PM for 30 minutes, and Haenam County will hold a torch welcoming event with residents.

This torch relay will proceed through three sections: from Godo Intersection in Haenam-eup, passing Haenam County Office, Local Food Direct Market Intersection, and then to the Court Intersection.

At the County Office Citizen Plaza, about 100 people including the Haenam County Governor, the county council chairman, and residents will gather to welcome the torch and unite their will for the successful hosting of the event.

Last month, Haenam held a special torch lighting ceremony at Ttangkkeut Maemseom Square in Songji, the first in the province, attended by County Governor Myeong Hyeon-gwan and Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do.

A county official said, “The 104th National Sports Festival will hold fencing and modern pentathlon events in Haenam, and we expect a lot of interest and support from the residents. We will make thorough preparations and operations to ensure that this becomes the most successful National Sports Festival ever.”
