"Cooperation with Israel to Rescue Hostages"
U.S. President Joe Biden announced on the 9th (local time) that at least 11 Americans have died due to the attack by the Palestinian armed group Hamas on Israel.
In a statement on the day, President Biden said, "We are witnessing a tragedy of immense scale and scope."
He added, "The safety of American citizens at home and abroad is the president's top priority," and said, "We are still in the process of verification, but we believe that among those held captive by Hamas, there are likely American citizens."
He continued, "I have instructed our team to coordinate and cooperate with Israeli officials on all aspects related to the hostages," emphasizing that experts from various U.S. government departments will be dispatched to consult with Israeli authorities to rescue the hostages.
On the 7th, Hamas infiltrated southern Israel, killing hundreds of civilians and taking some as hostages to the Gaza Strip. Foreign nationals were also among them. Hamas has stated that there are more than 100 hostages. Israel estimates the number of hostages to be around 150.
