"Health Over Movies"...Top Leisure Spending Is on "Health & Fitness"

Expenditure on Movie and Performance Viewing Ranks 2nd

Movie and performance viewing, which had held the undisputed first place in leisure activity spending, has been pushed down to second place. Instead, consumers opening their wallets for health and fitness showed the highest expenditure.

On the 8th, credit card platform Card Gorilla conducted a survey titled ‘Which area has the largest expenditure among hobby and leisure costs?’ targeting visitors to its website, and 'Health & Fitness' took first place with 23.8% (238 votes). Following were 'Movie, Performance, Exhibition, and Sports Game Viewing' (22.1%, 221 votes), third place was 'Games' (17.1%), and fourth place was 'Content Viewing' (11.9%), in that order. The survey was conducted from August 11 to 24, with a total of 1001 participants.

Card consumers’ interests also focused on cards offering related benefits. According to Card Gorilla’s announcements on the 26th and 27th of last month of the ‘Popular Credit Cards for Q3 2023’ and ‘Popular Check Cards’ for the same period, cards providing benefits for health & fitness, movie, performance, exhibition, and sports game viewing ranked first.

The 'KB Kookmin My WE:SH Card,' which took first place among popular credit cards in Q3, offers a 5% discount in various 'Health & Fitness' sectors such as comprehensive sports centers, golf (practice) ranges, tennis courts, swimming pools, yoga, bowling alleys, sports goods stores, and leisure goods stores.

Also, the 'Woori NU (NU) Ohachek (One Day Check)' card, which ranked first among popular check cards in Q3, provides 5% cashback at 'performance ticket' merchants such as Interpark Ticket, YES24 Ticket, Ticket Link, and Melon Ticket.

Reflecting such consumer demand, card companies have also launched numerous cards offering various leisure benefits. Hyundai Card released the 'NOL (NOL) Card' in April, which offers 10% points accumulation on Interpark Ticket, golf, and more, in partnership with Yanolja. NH Nonghyup Card launched the 'zgm.play' and 'zgm.play++' cards in June, providing various online and offline leisure benefits including fitness, games, and movies.

Meanwhile, in a separate survey conducted by Card Gorilla titled 'How much do you spend monthly on hobbies and leisure?', 'Over 300,000 KRW' took first place with 37.4% (238 votes). Second place was 'Over 100,000 KRW to 200,000 KRW or less,' chosen by 23.7% (151 votes).

Go Seung-hoon, CEO of Card Gorilla, said, "This appears to be the result of the spread of consumption patterns for oneself and the lifting of quarantine measures, which have revitalized previously subdued health & fitness and cultural arts activities." He added, "Recently, due to high inflation, many hobby and leisure specialized cards also include everyday benefits, so it is good to compare several cards."
