On the morning of the 6th at 10 a.m., Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, attended the ‘27th Senior Citizens' Day’ commemorative event held at the Nowon-gu Residents' Hall in Seoul.
As of September 2023, the population of seniors aged 65 and over residing in Nowon-gu is approximately 95,000, ranking third among Seoul’s autonomous districts, accounting for about 19% of the district’s total population. In response, the district is conducting various senior citizen programs to support the increasing elderly population’s leisure and welfare, and this commemorative event for Senior Citizens' Day was prepared as part of these efforts.
The first part of the event, attended by Mayor Oh Seung-rok, National Assembly members Ko Yong-jin, Woo Won-shik, Kim Sung-hwan, city and district council members, about 2,000 senior citizens, and local residents, included the national ceremony, congratulatory speeches, reading of the senior citizens' pledge, and awards for exemplary seniors. The second part featured performances by Kim Deok-su’s Samulnori troupe and a Wink performance.
After the reading of the senior citizens' pledge by the Vice President of the Korea Senior Citizens Association Nowon-gu Branch, awards were presented to 31 exemplary seniors who devoted themselves to society and neighbors as role models, contributors to senior welfare, and one exemplary senior organization.
While the ceremony was underway, outside the venue, related organizations held side events including ▲‘Seoul Nowon Senior Welfare Center ? Cognitive Robot "Bomi" Experience, Cocopang Experience (digital brain activity device), Metaverse Character Creation, AR Device Nintendo Bowling Experience’, ▲‘Surak Senior Welfare Center ? Mandala Mirror Making, Beverage Sharing’, ▲‘Gongneung Senior Welfare Center ? Yarn Flower Brooch Making, Flower Brooch Distribution’, and ▲‘Wolgye Senior Welfare Center ? Coffee Air Freshener Making, Coffee Drip Bag Making’.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “On Senior Citizens' Day, I want to express respect and gratitude to the seniors who are the foundation of our society,” adding, “We will continue to carefully manage support projects for discovering senior jobs and promoting leisure and cultural enjoyment for seniors.”
