Seoul City and KEPCO Collaboration 'Elevator Self-Power Generation Device Installation Support Project' 1st Place in 2023 Seoul Autonomous District Performance
'Olympic Family Town', 'Jamsil Els' with a Total of 201 Units, 230 Million KRW Installation Cost Secured from External Funding
Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) secured a total budget of 230 million KRW this year for the installation project of self-power generation devices for elevators in apartment complexes, supported by Seoul City and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), achieving the top performance among Seoul's autonomous districts.
The "self-power generation device for elevators" is a high-efficiency eco-friendly device that converts electrical energy generated from the counterweight and the elevator car's drop into power used for elevator operation. Depending on the number of building floors, it can save approximately 15-40% of energy, significantly reducing apartment electricity bills (management fees) and greenhouse gas emissions.
The district is supporting the installation of a total of 201 self-power generation devices in two complexes, "Jamsil Els" and "Olympic Family Town," with the 230 million KRW budget secured this year, which corresponds to the top performance among Seoul's autonomous districts.
Songpa-gu has five large apartment complexes ranked from first to fifth in Seoul in terms of the number of households in apartment complexes with over 5,000 households, all located within the district, resulting in a large number of elevators installed in apartments. To utilize this environment, the district began supporting the installation of self-power generation devices for elevators at "Jamsil Lake Palace" in 2018, when the project was in its early stages, and it is regarded as a representative exemplary case of the project, having operated successfully without a single failure to date.
In fact, the apartment management office reported, "Electricity bills have been consistently reduced by about 20-30% compared to before, which is viewed very positively from an operational standpoint," vividly conveying the economic effects of energy savings.
Accordingly, the district plans to actively encourage participation in the project targeting apartment complexes in the area next year as well. Support will be provided for the installation of self-power generation devices for elevators approved by KEPCO, excluding elevators of the type installed without a machine room (MRL).
Elevators that already have self-power generation devices installed according to the 2019 Seoul City Green Building Design Standards are also excluded. More detailed information about applications can be found in the upcoming announcement for installation support target recruitment.
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, "In an era of difficulties due to rising electricity costs, I am pleased that we can reduce the electricity burden on residents and contribute to greenhouse gas reduction through energy efficiency projects," adding, "We will expand proactive and effective support projects next year so that more residents can benefit."
