Vice Minister Park Yoon-gyu to Hold Media Day on the 5th
"Fare Plans Suitable for Telecom Competition" Praised
The Ministry of Science and ICT, the main government agency overseeing the mobile telecommunications industry, expressed a welcoming stance on LG Uplus's new 5G plans launched on the 5th.
On the same day, LG Uplus introduced a highly personalized 5G plan offering various options ranging from a minimum of 1GB data to unlimited, considering customer usage patterns.
Known as the 'Nugget' plan, it includes ▲16 types of 5G online-only plans starting from 30,000 KRW per month ▲family and acquaintances combined discounts ▲the ability to purchase additional data and supplementary calls.
Park Yoon-kyu, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, praised the Nugget plan during a media day held at the National Science and Technology Advisory Council conference room in Gwanghwamun, Seoul.
The Ministry of Science and ICT has been working with the three major mobile carriers?SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus?to devise measures to reduce household communication expenses.
Vice Minister Park said, "One of the policy goals is to ensure continuous competition among the three mobile carriers," adding, "It seems that an appropriate plan has been introduced for the first time."
He continued, "I hope this trend will influence other operators and that plans reflecting customized consumption patterns will continue to be introduced, enabling ongoing reductions in communication fees."
Kim Kyung-man, Director of Telecommunications Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, also explained, "In the 'Telecommunications Market Competition Promotion Plan' announced last July, we stated that we would discuss and create plans that match usage with the mobile operators," adding, "The Nugget plan is the first result."
He said, "Customers can purchase only the amount of data they want and need, and if there is leftover data, they do not pay for it, eliminating the effect of unused fees," adding, "With LG Uplus launching this as a pilot, it will serve as a stepping stone toward plans that match usage."
Furthermore, Director Kim hinted at the possibility of similar plans being launched by SK Telecom and KT, saying, "I will provide updates once negotiations with other operators are completed."
