On the 4th, former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Kyung-jin posted on his Facebook, "An advertisement like the one in the photo below appeared on my timeline. Is this really an ad made (or authorized) by Dr. Kim Jong-in?" Shortly after, he updated, "I just spoke with Chairman (Kim Jong-in). This is the work of scammers," he said.
The photo he pointed out featured former People Power Party Emergency Committee Chairman Kim Jong-in alongside President Yoon Seok-youl, with the title "Why are there still people struggling economically?" The content of the post was a stock investment solicitation.
The account begins with, "Hello, I am Kim Jong-in. I am the 3rd Chief Secretary for Economic Affairs and the Chairman of the Korea Development Strategy Institute. Today, I want to share with you ways to overcome economic difficulties."
It then claims, "If you follow my guidance, you will be able to earn profits. Since I have never suffered losses exceeding 20%, I guarantee an 8% success rate."
This advertisement was found to link to a site featuring investment testimonials such as "You will become rich," "I started with 300,000 won and made more than five times the profit in two months," and "Fortunately, I met the teacher and recovered losses and made profits under his guidance."
Fake advertisements featuring famous figures in the economic field are rampant on SNS. Previously, Professor Jang Ha-joon of Cambridge University, former Hanwha Investment & Securities CEO Joo Jin-hyung, former Meritz Asset Management CEO John Lee, and comedian Hwang Hyun-hee, who is active as a full-time investor, were also reported to have been impersonated.
Meanwhile, former Emergency Committee Chairman Kim is reportedly planning to request a police investigation into this matter.
