Controlling Dozens of Robots with 'I-eum 5G'... Shipyard Process Management

Frequency Supply to LG Electronics, Sejong Telecom, and ETRI

On the 4th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it has completed the frequency supply procedures for I-eum 5G (5G specialized network) to LG Electronics, Sejong Telecom, and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).

In logistics sites, dozens of robots will be simultaneously controlled, and I-eum 5G convergence services will be utilized for process and safety management at shipyards.

LG Electronics and Sejong Telecom were already operators assigned I-eum 5G frequencies. With this new allocation, three additional I-eum 5G service zones have been added, and ETRI has newly been designated I-eum 5G frequencies, bringing the total number of institutions providing domestic I-eum 5G services to 25 across 46 locations.

LG Electronics plans to operate dozens of autonomous mobile robots at a logistics center of a client located in Incheon using the I-eum 5G frequency. The smart logistics service will be implemented where autonomous robots load items from storage racks and move them to inspection desks for delivery. LG Electronics also stated that it plans to consider introducing 28 GHz band I-eum 5G to support large-capacity hyper-connected services where numerous robots and cameras exchange high-precision video in real time, in line with future diverse customized 5G service demands.

Sejong Telecom plans to provide large-capacity data transmission services using I-eum 5G frequencies to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan. This will enable the transmission and viewing of 3D drawings on personal devices and allow visualization of status information for all processes, safety, logistics, quality, and materials within the workplace. This realizes a "visible shipyard." Additionally, by transmitting real-time operational information of work cranes and providing integrated control services, work efficiency and safety are expected to improve.

ETRI applied for I-eum 5G frequency designation to develop technology using drones. They plan to demonstrate services such as intelligent missing person searches through autonomous flight of drone swarms, crop pest control and growth management, and wireless station inspections in mountainous areas.

Choi Woo-hyuk, Director of the Radio Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “We will actively support the expansion of I-eum 5G in various industrial sites to provide large-capacity hyper-connected services.”
