'2023 World Innovative Cities Forum' to be Held in Daejeon This Month

The World Innovative Cities Forum will be held in Daejeon this year. The forum is organized for delegations from five overseas cities to attend and discuss solutions to urban problems faced jointly by countries around the world through inter-city cooperation, as well as to deliberate on sustainable urban development models.


Daejeon City announced on the 4th that it will hold the "2023 World Innovative Cities Forum" at the Daejeon Convention Center from the 5th to the 6th.


'2023 World Innovative Cities Forum' to be Held in Daejeon This Month

The forum will be attended by about 20 city representatives from Seattle, USA; Meri County, Mongolia; Calgary, Canada; Dortmund, Germany; and Malaga, Spain.


On the first day of the forum, the morning will feature an opening ceremony and keynote session, followed by presentations on urban innovation policy cases in the afternoon.


The keynote speaker will be Tjark-Tjin-A-Tsoi, CEO of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). At this session, Tjark-Tjin-A-Tsoi is scheduled to deliver a speech on "Advanced Technology-Based Inter-City Solidarity and Open Innovation Strategies" for solving urban problems and achieving sustainable co-growth.


The thematic presentations will be conducted by John Jorritsma, former mayor of Eindhoven and chairman of the supervisory board of Eindhoven University of Technology’s innovation startup holding company, and Brian Sulet, CEO of the Seattle Economic Development Corporation.


In the afternoon session, Seokbong Lee, Deputy Mayor for Economy and Science of Daejeon City; Alicia Isquierdo, Deputy Mayor of Malaga, Spain; Brian Sulet, CEO of Seattle Economic Development Corporation; Richard Madaleno, Chief Administrative Officer of Meri County, Mongolia; Bruce Cullen, Director of Convergence, Analysis & Innovation Bureau of Calgary, Canada; and Martin van der Putten, Director of International Relations Bureau of Dortmund, will present excellent policy cases that solved urban problems through science.


The session on the 6th will be closed to the public and will be dedicated to discussions among city representatives participating in the forum on sustainable urban cooperation measures.


The delegation participating in the city representatives’ meeting will discuss the proposed global inter-city cooperation platform, tentatively named the "World Economic Science Cities Alliance," proposed by Daejeon City, and will collaborate to derive meaningful outcomes.


Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon, said, "The forum is an opportunity to share the experiences and opinions of global science innovation leaders on urban innovation growth," adding, "We will ensure that the forum becomes a process where participating city representatives share a vision of jointly responding to urban problems for co-growth and find practical solutions applicable to each city."


Meanwhile, the forum is hosted by the Daejeon Science and Industry Promotion Agency and organized by Daejeon City.
